Japanese retro-rock group Superfly has hit the 300,000 download mark for their new song "Tamashii Revolution" in just eleven short days. The song was being used as the promotional theme song for the World cup on NHK network, which helped to create a lot of hype over its release; one that came well timed on the 18th, the day before the Japan/Netherlands game.
The song was a best seller on itunes and Chaku-Uta cell phone downloads, managing to stay at the number one spot on itunes for eleven consecutive days. Many are attributing its high sales to the "World Cup Effect" boosting its sales, but this track is just one of many recent releases to show the popularity of download only releases.
Even though the song has been met with tremendous success online, it is still not planned for a single CD release. More and more musicians seem to be releasing songs in this download only approach, as Japanese rock band Tokyo Jihen also just announced that their new song will be download only.
