Studio Ghibli’s “Mimi wo sumaseba” makes you depressed?

Anime films by Studio Ghibli are broadcasted every once in a while on TV in Japan, and one of the masterpieces “Mimi wo Sumaseba (Whisper of the heart)” was broadcasted in July.

After the broadcast, there was a thread titled “Write your impression after watching Mimi wo sumaseba” on 2 channel (The biggest forum in Japan), and many users posted that they felt depressed.  Some comments were, “It makes me want to die.”, “No matter how much I regret, I can never go back to my days of youth.”

“Mimi wo sumaseba” is a youth story about a junior high school couple struggling for their future and love.  It seems like many people feel that they wasted their days of youth, and how pure they used to be, which makes people feel depressed.

Although I love the movie, I can totally relate to the comments by viewers, although not as extreme.

For you teenagers out there, make sure to enjoy these years!

If this makes this any better, I personally felt really good after having watched the movie. It gave me hope for the future.

Makes me want to watch this!!

  • makaihime

I can understand what their saying, but its a part of life, we take what we learnt and what we experienced and grow from that. Its more like a film that makes you reflect on life rather than depressed. You know what made me depressed? Grave of the Fireflies….Now that’s something that’ll get you down in the dumps for weeks. ( ´_ゝ`)..

My mom said the same thing too! She was like “God, I wasted so many years of my precious youth! Argh! Turn it off!”
But I think I’ll just live my life to the fullest so that I can feel like I fulfilled my youth/childhood. Um, for as long as that lasts.

  • yassie

  • Orange_s2

i love studio ghibli and actually i have this movie and it’s one of my favorites. it’s true…when i was watching this i did feel like i wasted my youth…i mean i just turned 20 this year…20! and that is like the start of adulthood!! it just made me feel sad that i didn’t do as much as i wanted…but then it also made me realize that i’m happy for the way things turned out! so many good memories and bad too! true i’ll never get back my youth but there are many positive aspects to the past that will help shape the future and teach me to not waste a moment!
@makaihime: OMG!! i have graves of the fireflies and i know exactly what you mean! that movie is like the ultimate ultimate depressing movie from ghibli EVER! O_O never watched it after the first time!!

i love all the movies from Ghibli Studio too and i can just watch them over and over again. i find their movies like Whisper of the Heart, Only Yesterday, Ocean Waves and Grave of Fireflies so ‘realistic’ and the story is beautifully told. animated movies from Ghibli Studio are the best … IMO, so much better than Disney’s.

  • crazymentogurl

    Holy crap!
I freakin’ LOVED this movie when I first watched it..definitely my favorite Ghibli movie.
But I do see how it depresses some people..for me, I wasn’t depressed, nor was I overly happy however.
I did feel regretful, only because I didn’t have a fulfilling or exciting experience like that during my junior high/intermediate years.
But I felt rather light and free (awkwardly described) because it was such a beautiful and hopeful movie.
With all good things though, I just wished the storyline could’ve developed more…second movie maybe? Hehehe, just kidding :)

I own almost every film that Studio Ghibli has out.. and whisper of the heart is one of them… Its a great movie although im far from getting depressed when I see this.. if you are a fan like me then you know to expect some kind of human emotion / lesson…. even when the characters are a lil more then different you seem to connect in the story lines.. but depressed never, just amazed of how great they are in what they create.. ♥
I totally recommend that you watch it or any other film by Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki =DD

  • Dilandau
