Tokyo Hotlist part II

Now for the top 10 ‘sparkly’ stars of CNN’s “Tokyo Hotlist.”

10. Shogen: a.k.a ‘Shogenism’, 31 and still upcoming. He is a model who is on every Seven Stars cigarette vending machine poster. James Dean of Japan, he has a cool stare and a “come-hither smile.” He also has a credit of 10 full length feature films like “Seven Samurai.”

9. Exile: “Like the mochi in your bowl sticking to everything, this macho singing group has latched onto every branch of the pop-culture tree. The seven-member bad-boy R&B dance and vocal troupe spawned 34 hit singles, seven best-of albums, a lifestyle magazine, several acting careers, and, oh yeah, they recently announced their 2010 tour taking in 22 cities that is expected to sell 1.1 million tickets, setting a new Japan record. Success of course, means expansion, so earlier last year they upped the number of members to 14. Now even if they stop producing hit records, fans will still spend years trying to remember them all.

8. Meisa Kuroki: the dark star. This starlet is an actress, model and singer and snagged the role of Moriyuki in “Space Battleship Yamato” from Erika Sawajiri. She is a JJ model and currently is the Japanese representative for Giorgio Armani.

7. Hisako Nakajo: a hostess helper. She’s head of the (arguably) the most influential magazine in Japan right now, Koakuma Ageha. It’s a ‘cabaret club hostess’ fashion magazine.  Koakuma Ageha’s ‘extreme sparkle-graphics’ are so awesome they’ve spread over to Popteen and Non no (the ultimate ‘good girl ‘ magazine). Without this hostess star editor, where would everyone get their hostess information from?

6. Alan Dawa Dolma: Tibetan Wailer. Not Japanese but a Tokyo resident. She debut under the name Alan, and made waves when she sang the theme song to John Woo’s Red Cliff saga.  She had her solo debut in January 2010 and sang a mix of ballads, J-pop and traditional Tibetan tunes.

5. Ryo Ishikawa: the club heartthrob. He’s the youngest golfer (at 15 years-old) to win the Japan Golf Tour. Now 18, he’s ranked 51 on the Official World Golf Ranking (as of July 2010) and no.1 in Japan. He set the lowest record ever carded in the Japanese tour, 58. Ryo is becoming a prince for commercial work, he has ads for ANA, Toyota and Lotte. He’s also received the nicknames “Hanikami Oji” aka ‘Bashful Prince’.

4. Tsubasa Masuwaka: a beloved underdog. She’s a hot gyaru mama who became the ‘It Girl’ when she modeled for Popteen. She became the magazine’s top model, product endorsed that generated up to Y100M worth of economic activity. She married Men’s Egg model Naoki Umeda in 2007 and retired to become a fulltime mom. She recently returned and is the model for PopSister and owns the ever-so-popular fake eyelash brand, Dolly Wink.

3.Tadashi Yanai: the brains behind Uniqlo. Fast Retailing (FR), was a family owned business that sold cheap casuals to dads in backwater locales. After Tadashi took the reins, he turned FR’s brand, Uniqlo into the best-selling fashion brand in Japan. He’s no.1 on Forbes’ Japan rich list in 2009. He has plans to turn FR into a Y5 trillion revenue global empire by 2020. In order to do this, he’s making the entire company staff learn English; it’s a requirement, so if you don’t speak English you better learn worker-bees.

2. Mademoiselle Yulia: the Color wheel. She is the most-sought after DJ for VIP event all around Tokyo’s chic clubs. This mademoiselle is known as “The Lady Gaga of Japan.” She’s only 22 and performed with M.I.A., Steve Aoki and Will.i.am.  Yulia’s released two secone remix albums and has her own accessory line, GIZA.

And now for number one…. If you’re surprised by the result, then maybe you need to pay more attention to Japan’s popular stars, cause this lady, made a comeback like no other and deserves to be in the top three.

She’s known as the “Comeback Queen” of 2010, is an actress, model and singer and makes headlines like no other. She’s the center of the controversy of Japanese entertainment with her head held high. She’s Erika Sawajiri and if it’ not Erika’s way, it’s the highway.

1. Erika Sawajiri: Comeback Queen. The 24-year-old diva made the most amazing comeback in Japanese entertainment. After being scrutinized and being let go by her company, Erika left Japan with her husband and moved to Spain. She set up her own management in Spain, then faxed Japanese media outlets that she’s coming back and doing everything her way (she’s a female Johnny Kitagawa).  She’s done comeback performances, appeared semi-nude in a salon poster, took if off with a foreigner and to top it all, divorced her husband. This single lady is raising her hand up and is on (almost) everyone’s lips. Don’t deny it, as bitchy as she is, she can back her shit like no other female in Japan. You either love her, hate her or love-to-hate her. It doesn’t matter as this is one diva that will be in the industry for the long haul.

Erika Sawajiri! People may say anything to her, but she’s one of the smartest female entertainer in Japan. Bitchy and Brainy make her Sexy

  • hikarumunjj

Where’s Arashi? It’s unbelievable they are not on the list…

  • m&M

i don’t get this list but i like Erika i love her bitchy personalty i just want to spank her so bad.

Tsubasa Masuwaka is like the prettiest thing ever. I’m so jealous of her. T^T

  • eyeless

I think this list is about raising stars that’s why it’s called hotlist. Stars that has been on top for many many years won’t appear on the list

  • 303aegiszx

Not surprised with ERIKA being No.1 there. She turned her career upside down and is driving it in full force. She will be unstoppable if she continues the pace at which shes going. Don’t be surprised if 2011 is the year where ERIKA is everywhere from CM’s to PV to Magazines!

  • jiggy_girl

omg i can’t belive thats the same Erika from 1 liter of tears?!? She’s so different! i never knew she was the bitchy type.

  • Lindachii

suprised arashi isnt on this especially no johnny’s lol xD
    love erika!

  • kashiko

I love alan but she’s not that popular in Japan. Even though he has unique voice/style and under avex but her sales’re quite weak. Kana Nishino deserves a spot in this list. Her second album is really a hot topic and it can become one of the best-selling albums of 2010 [already surpassing Ayu and approaching Namie] ^^

  • silverings

Knew Meisa was going to end up on this list, but I agree with the other comments. Where is Arashi? They’re pretty much Japan’s mascot when Hello Kitty isn’t around.

    Speaking of–where’s Hello Kitty?! XD

  • kashiko

oh wait I spot wwong info. alan debut in 2007, not 2010 *__*

  • mokonanokawaii

LOL, I didn’t know those things happened to Erika Sawajiri. I like her, even from before, because of the tv version of Taiyou no Uta and 1 Litre of Tears. Now, yeah, still. :) Kuroki Meisa :-bd

Haha! I like it that people are asking where Arashi is. They’re my first favorite idol group… so where are they? XD :)) Just kidding. I wonder why Johnny Kitagawa isn’t there when they dubbed Erika Sawajiri as the female Johnny Kitagawa.

  • pink_ipod

OWH that Yulia (No.2) the one who is 2NE1 stylist friend with? Did she appeared on one of the 2ne1 tv episode , when CL went to japan? aite?

  • iduncare

ermmm…. i dun actually get it why no johny’s on the list.. i mean come on arashi, kat-tun everyone??? but hell yeah erika totally make a great comeback..

  • britney635

    Ryo Ishikawa is cute!
I have to say I got surprised Erika is number 1. But that’s because I didn’t know she has made a successful comeback. I’m not that updated with the Japanese entertainment, last thing I heard about her was that she got married to man that was 20 years older than her. I guess it’s good that she has returned successfully. And oh, she looks so different in the pic from her 1 Liter days.

  • chips10more

lol.i think the hotlist part1 is better than part2.

  • shachico

i was actually expecting arashi on the list, but surprised that they’re not included, hmmm wonder why, they’re really popular even obaachans and ojiichans like them, well japanese listings isn’t complete without johnny’s

  • MontrealKelly749

Weird that not a single johnny got on the list… Like Arashi or KaT-TUN …

  • AyaYuy

surprising. I expected Erika to be high ranked, but I also expected others on the list

  • sssssss

    ah i knew it!
Everyone! make way for Erika Sawajiri! :D

  • makaihime

Alan is ones of the most talented artists I’ve ever heard and her beauty just makes her perfection. Uniqlo I’m not surprised is up there…Their #1 in Japan and they just bought a main store in SoHo so their definitely aiming for world domination. Erika? Mesia! ^_^ And Erika? That conceited bitch and her cocky attitude will take her far in the industry cause shes got the smarts to do it, that and I love her as an actress xD.

  • Orange_s2

wow, i’m surprised Arashi isn’t on the list. i was pretty sure they were going to be on the list because if AKB48 is on the list, then i’m pretty sure a JE group would be as well.

  • http://youtube.com/user/wvrtv Neika

at least ONE OF THEM should be there!!!!!!!!!

    personally, i hate sawajiri erika
but i admire her ability to come back full force
so i guess i just love to hate her~
    i mean i totally get why she's number 1
i admire her, but i still hate her either way.

  • michie_roadie

lol its funny erica is number one, gooooo girl, even tho she can be a bit bitchy, hey she worked for it!

  • leelee

really sawajiri erika? yea i have to agree that she is bitchy and i really hate her but still…i think that’s cool for her that she’s on the list. i think the list is very well compose haha!
