“SP Kakumei Hen” may be remade into a Hollywood film

On February 24th, V6 member Okada Junichi, actor Tsutsumi Shinichi, and actress Maki Youko attended a private showing of the film “SP Kakumei Hen”, where they shared their thoughts on the upcoming movie and revealed that discussions were in the works for an American version of the film.

“SP” is an adaptation of the popular Fuji TV drama of the same name, and tells the story of a four-member squad of police bodyguards. The main character, Inoue Kaoru (played by Okada), is a trained martial artist who has photographic memory and can remember things in an instant. He uses this unique power of his to track down suspects, remember footprints left behind, and gather information in his fight against terrorists. The movie will wrap up the drama series, and opens in theaters on March 12th. “Yesterday, I was so nervous that I couldn’t sleep. I was thinking about how the opening day would go,” Okada admitted with an embarassed grin on his face.

Since the film has already received multiple offers to be remade into a major Hollywood movie, it was announced that negotiations with Fuji Television were already in place. “I think it’s amazing,” replied Okada when asked about the Hollywood offers. “I wonder how it would turn out… Will they change SP (secret police) into ’secret service’? I’m worried about who would be (which characters).” The V6 member also stated that he would like to see any future American remake be headed by the original screenwriter for the movie, Kaneshiro Kazuki.

“It’s fine that Hollywood wants to show a movie like this, but… truthfully, a country like America wouldn’t give (the original) a try,” Tsutsumi commented, but then he smiled and said, “I’m so happy and excited (for it)!”

I can see the comments now “Omg why can’t Hollywood leave Japanese movies alone! Blah blah blah.” I think it’s because not many remakes of Japanese manga/anime/movies were really that successful. I never seen SP but if they at least stay true to the original plot/theme then I can hope it’ll be ok. Everyone keeps saying that America should just leave Japanese things alone but if that was the case I bet half of us wouldn’t be on this forum anyway. I just wish remakes were made to be another artform that would win awards… not just only sucking out money. Reading the plot on dramawiki of the drama it’s not like it has to really take place in Japan so it’s doable….

I don’t know if they would change everything ’cause the fact that SP’s main issue was being “HUMAN SHIELDS” and to other people, it seems kinda stupid I guess…

did SP stand for secret police in the drama? i thought it’s security police?

sigh if japan makes remakes something from other country. and other people dislike it, it’s okay to comeplain about it.

but if it’s the other way around, people says we’re the ones who are close minded, we are the ones who are eventualy racist because we don’t want to see an caucasian play a chracter that’s originaly from asia. but the other way around it’s all okay.

i’m not againt remaking that much but, it’s not a reason for people not to complain, they can complain if they want to. if spiderman fans can make fun of the japanese spiderman or any other stuff of japan than we fans from japan also have the rights to complain about power rangers screwing up supersentai.

want me to be be open mindend, create something new that’s possibly inspired from something that existed.

don’t use the excuse that we’re not open minded, cuz remaking stuff isn’t either.

it’s funny though saying race doesn’t matter either is another lame excuse to shut us up. if that was really the case than we already saw afro american, italian, spanish, arabian or any other race taking the part of an existing character. but suprise, suprise it never happend.

let’s see how this is going to turn out.

I dunno maybe they would make it more fitting to American audience? I dunno I never saw it but it sounded like that it really wouldn’t be that much of a dramatic culture change (since I don’t think it can be adapted in almost any country… the theme is not Japanese-rooted I think) so that’s what I mean by doable (at least not super pissing off anti-Hollywood/American remakes/adaptions/dubs) but they still probably would.

but then again, US had its own ‘Human Target’ which is quite similar with SP in theme>

Cause Hollywood has never, ever had a movie like that, right? I can think of a dozen of movies and tv series with similar themes made in the US without focusing too much.

The only thing you can do with Hollywood today is flushing it down a toilet.

And if I want to see American actors not being able to handle a gun correctly, then I watch 24, or CSI, or any other contemporary crap. Don’t need ANOTHER production with that. It’s sad, really. But it’s a trend in Japan, too. In SP barely any character can handle his/her gun properly. I’d kick them all off the range. Been shooting for 20 years myself and I carry at work these days and most of the time I just facepalm or headdesk. Proper gun handling is coming more and more scarce in movies and tv series. It was bad in the 80s, with all the assault rifles shooting 6,000 rounds without reloading (I’m looking at you Arnold), but these days it’s worse, mostly safety issues (like finger on the trigger when not being ready to fire, wrong reloading, wrong grip -the classic Hollywood cup grip works nice with blanks, but I wouldn’t want to use it with live ammo-, no tension, wrong stance, utterly wrong lamp technique etc.) And when it comes to gun safety I’m a raging bull. Zero tolerance. There’s too much that can go wrong if you don’t follow proper safety protocols. Sure, they only use blanks in the movies. But how many idiots take movies for fact? Many. Too many. You should see what Baywatch has done to what people think of how to do CPR. It’s horrible.

SP was a great series, until the final episode. One bodyguard after the other standing in front of the target, letting the attacker shoot them down one by one (an attacker with a flipping revolver, mind you, that’s 6 rounds before he has to reload), without anyone returning fire or extracting the target. That was utterly STUPID. Who writes such crap?

Japan barely makes any remakes. And if, then their remakes are usually superior. Seen the German original of “Heaven’s Door”? It was horrible (Til Schweiger can’t act, he’s worse than Keanu Reeves.) The Japanese remake was far better. It’s always Hollywood that makes crappy remakes of everything. They did a lot of remakes of EU movies, which all, more or less, flopped. Then Japan, or Asian cinema in general, became their new toy.

The characters in a remake would be American.

Also, there is no Afro American “race”, no Italian “race”, no Spanish “race”. Race is an invention. There is only one human race, and that’s the homo sapiens. All other races have become extinct. Also, let me rub this in, “ethnicity” is politically correct Newspeak for “race”. Scientifically speaking, you will find more genetic diversity in a group of 50 monkeys than in the entire mankind. There isn’t enough genetic diversity to divide us into races.

  • MinahMyu

Well even though we are all part of the human race people still use that as an excuse to have not have a person of a different ethnicity as a starring role for a mainstream movie. When a super super diverse country like America it just sucks to see in a movie that’s meant for the general audience typically a character that doesn’t look like you (because it feels like your appearance isn’t good enough to be a lead). Because in a way it’s still a type of discrimination. It’s not really the race/ethnicity that’s the main issue but the stereotype that’s behind it. (I’m a black girl and I hate the stereotype of some loud mouth “ghetto” acting female who doesn’t have a baby daddy… I would like to see a black female as lead to represent just an American girl…) Just to have more black female leads in a mainstream movie would be a miracle in itself….

yeah okay it’s not a race but, you know what i mean.

let me put it this way than, i just don’t see a diversity of color when it comes with japanese remakes.

  • http://twitter.com/Rocklian Bobby Sokarijo

i would like to see that too.

  • dudebro

What I’ve noticed about Japanese productions is that they virtually always keep their finger off the trigger, even if it’s a completely silly and unrealistic movie or drama. In the US it’s much less common.

I just thought of Tokyo DOGS lol. I think it was interesting to see the contrast of American way of doing things and the Japanese way (Shun had no problem shooting people)
