Japan Box Office Report – January 07th/08th

"Yamamoto Isoroku" / "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" / "Magic Tree House"
After the two holiday weekends, the weekend of January 7th and 8th finally saw some success in the box office. While things were relatively quiet over Christmas and New Year’s, another public holiday on Monday — the ‘Coming of Age Day’ — allowed people to stream into the theaters to catch the latest flicks.
“Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” was the biggest winner yet again, extending its streak to four weekends. Its revenue at the Japanese box office already totals 4,056,423,250 Yen (52.74 million USD) after four straight weeks on the top. Breaking the threshold of 5,000,000,000 Yen definitely shouldn’t be a ‘mission impossible’ anymore.
The Japanese war drama “Rengou Kantai Shireichoukan Yamamoto Isoroku” bravely defended its second place position for the third consecutive weekend. 875,018 people, both young and old, have already watched this movie, resulting in a revenue of 1,016,723,600 Yen (13.22 million USD).
Coming in third place was the Japanese anime “Magic Tree House“, which is based on the globally successful children’s book series of the same name by Mary Pope Osborne. Directed by Nishikiori Hiroshi, the film features the voices of Kitagawa Keiko and Ashida Mana. 93,872 people couldn’t resist its charm, giving it a passable yet somewhat underwhelming start, considering the popularity of the series and the movie’s voice cast. The revenue was 106,318,200 Yen (1.38 million USD).
With “Fright Night“, another new movie just barely made it into the top ten. It achieved a revenue of 70,821,200 Yen (920,958 USD).
The total revenues of some of the other movies were inside or just outside of the top ten: “friends Mononoke Jima no Naki” – 1,260,000,000 Yen (16.38 million USD), “Inazuma Eleven GO” – 970,000,000 Yen (12.61 million USD), “Kaibutsu-kun” – 2,950,000,000 Yen (38.36 million USD), “Kamen Rider” – 1,400,000,000 Yen (18.2 million USD), “Genji Monogatari Sennen no Nazo” – 1,160,000,000 Yen (15.08 million USD), and “K-On!” – 1,450,000,000 Yen (18.85 million USD).
As usual, you can check out all the trailers of the new Japanese movies below the box office ranking!
