Japan Box Office Report – February 4th/5th

"Kirin no Tsubasa" / "Always: Sunset on Third Street 3" / "Nihon Rettou"
In this week’s Japan Box Office Report, “ALWAYS 3” comes out on top for the third consecutive weekend, while the documentary “Nihon Rettou” and the American film “Tower Heist” fight for the third place.
The top remains unchallenged thanks to the very slowly decreasing appeal of “ALWAYS San-chome no Yuhi ‘64” (English title: “Always: Sunset on Third Street 3“). It already left the threshold of 2,000,000,000 Yen (26.01 million USD) behind it and is in for a very successful and long run in the chart.
“Kirin no Tsubasa: Gekijouban Shinzanmono” also didn’t give away its second place from last week. With a cumulative revenue of 700,000,000 Yen (9.1 million USD) it’s doing more than okay at the box office.
On third place opened the Japanese nature documentary, “Nihon Rettou Ikimono-tachi no Monogatari“, at least in terms of sold tickets. 68,228 people saw the film over the weekend, resulting in a revenue of 80,214,800 Yen (1.04 million USD). Of course it cannot compete with last year’s BBC documentary “One Life“, but it sure has it very own charm.
The American film “Tower Heist” opened on fourth place with a revenue of 107,931,800 Yen (1.4 million USD), which would actually be enough to be on third place, but it only sold 66,108 tickets. Overall it’s an ordinary start of a somewhat popular film from Hollywood.
“Arakawa Under the Bridge” opened on the eight place.
TOHO is dominating the charts again. The whole top five is handled by this distributor and with “DOCUMENTARY of AKB48” there are a total of six TOHO films in the top ten.
As usual, you can check out all the trailers of the new Japanese films below the box office ranking!
