Japan Box Office Report – September 15th/16th

(02) 'Resident Evil: Retribution' / (01) 'Odoru Daisousasen THE FINAL' / (03) 'Rurouni Kenshin'
‘Bayside Shakedown’ stays on top, ‘Resident Evil’ opens up in the second slot, and ‘Tenchi Meisatsu’ failed to make it into the top three.
An extended weekend always means a very satisfying weekend for the movie industry and this weekend was no exception. ‘Odoru Daisousasen THE FINAL‘ (international title: ‘Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL‘) easily managed to stay on top. It has already attracted over 2,000,000 viewers and grossed more than 2,500,000,000 Yen (31,675,000 USD) in only eleven days. ‘BRAVE HEARTS: UMIZARU‘ has found its biggest competition this year.
As usual, the ‘Resident Evil‘ franchise (or ‘Biohazard‘ in Japan) also experienced a very successful opening weekend for its latest chapter ‘Resident Evil: Retribution‘. The movie mobilized 433,938 people and grossed 676,992,500 Yen (8,577,494 USD) over the weekend. If the ranking was based on revenue, it would have been on the top this weekend, but only because 3D screenings are more expensive than normal screenings. Although it didn’t manage to beat its prequel, it still was the strongest start of a non-Japanese movie in 2012.
In fourth place opened ‘Tenchi Meisatsu‘ (international title: ‘Insight Into the Universe‘) starring Okada Junichi. It recorded 116,431 viewers and a revenue of 138,213,900 Yen (1,751,170 USD). It’s a solid start and a good sign that it might be able to gross more than 1 billion Yen (12.7 million USD).
Two more movies opened in at sixth and eighth place with ‘Kagi Dorobou no Method‘ (starring Sakai Masato, Kagawa Teruyuki, and Hirosue Ryoko) and ‘Mirror Mirror‘, respectively. French movie ‘Intouchables‘ still won’t let itself push out of the top 10 which is impressive.
