On May 27th and 28th, from 19:00 to 22:00, Tokyo's symbol, Tokyo Tower, will light up and display an image of a lotus flower.
This is to celebrate the release of the animated film, "Tezuka Osamu no Buddha -Akai Sabakyo! Utsukushiku-". The film is part of a trilogy dedicated to the last Tezuka Osamu's "Buddha" manga, and it will open that weekend on May 28th.
Originally the light display was supposed to run last March on the 30th and 31st and from April 4th to the 8th, as those dates mark the birthday of Buddha and April 8th is "Lotus Day". However, due to the Tohoku earthquakes earlier in March, the lighting display was put on hold to conserve electricity.
Right now Tokyo Tower has been conserving about 50%-65% for the display, and as for the design of the light display, famous lighting designer Ishii Motoko has taken up the task. The planning committee has decided to continue this new tradition next year as well on Lotus Day.
Note: The image above is not associated with the Lotus Day light display. It is one of the tower's regular displays.
