AKB48 holds their own 'Kohaku' competition

allkpop

On December 20th, popular idol group AKB48 and their sister groups held their own "AKB48 Kohaku Taikou Uta Gassen" competition at the Tokyo Dome City Hall.

With Team A captain Takahashi Minami serving as the leader of the red team and Team K member Oshima Yuko as the leader of the white team, 139 members of the AKB48 family participated in their own 'Kohaku' just 11 days before the official event, giving the girls an opportunity to spark their competitive flame before heading to the Kohaku stage on New Year's Eve.

The competition featured performances of AKB48 family songs, but sung by other members and groups, giving fans a chance to hear different girls cover popular hits.

White team member Sashihara Rino sang Itano Tomomi's "Dear J" and red team member Akimoto Sayaka covered Maeda Atsuko's "Flower" in a 'solo debut showdown'. Afterwards, teams led by Team B captain Kashiwagi Yuki (white) and Team A's Takajo Aki (red) covered songs by sub-groups Not yet and No Sleeves in a battle of sub-units. The friendly competition also marked their sister group JKT48's first appearance on a Japanese stage, where they performed AKB48's hit song "Aitakatta".

A prestigious panel of six judges, including Sankei Sports critic Nomura Katsuya, were asked to provide their opinions, just like in the original 'Kohaku' event. When asked to comment on the army of young girls from AKB48, SKE48, HKT48, NMB48, and JKT48 at the event, Nomura commented with a smile, "It's been a long time since I've [been around] so many young hormones." He then asked if any of the girls were dating baseball players, but - suddenly reminded of their dating prohibition - jokingly added, "You had better marry baseball players."

At the end, Maeda Atsuko from the White Team came out in a sexy, pseudo-kimono style outfit to perform "Kareha no Station", followed by Takahashi Minami from the Red Team performing "Itoshisa no Accel" on a gondola in a last effort to represent their team and sway the votes. With countless people observing the competition from approximately 111 movie theaters across the nation, viewers watched as the white team took the victory.

"We did it!" cried Oshima with joy upon hearing that her team had won. "Everyone on the red team surprised me as well. We were all able to see each other's good points," she also commented, congratulating everyone for their hard work.
