On May 19th, it was announced that three stories of Higashino Keigo's 'Warai' ('Laugh') novel series will be distributed as a new drama series through the online service "Drama JoKer" provided by KDDI and J:COM. The three stories are starring Mikami Hiroshi, Sasano Takashi, and Hamada Gaku, and will have Tortoise Matsumoto provide the theme song called "Warattemi".

Higashino is a renowned writer of many great mystery novels such as 'Yogisha X no Kenshin' ('The Devotion of Suspect X'), and'Byakuyako' ('Into the White Night') among others. He's also written many short stories with a unique kind of black humor released in four collections called 'Kaishou Shousetsu' (1995), 'Dokushou Shousetsu' (1996), 'Kokushou Shousetsu' (2005), and 'Waishou Shousetsu' (2012).

The producer of the online drama series commented, "I want people to understand that Higashino is not just an author of mystery novels and that he has a different side to him. Since the 1990s, he has released the 'Shou' series, which is a collection of many short stories that feature black and cynical humor as their theme. I would even go so far as to say that humor is one very important element in Higashino's world view in general."

She also explained that it's important that the main cast doesn't consist of actual entertainers. "The ideal cast would have to consist of actors who aren't exactly known to be funny... If we used an actor who calls into question 'Isn't it funny?', it would probably distract the actual comedic themes in each story."

The first story is called 'Motemote Spray', and is directed by Mizuochi Yutaka. It's a story about a young man who wants to become popular (mote) with women, and receives a mysterious spray from a dubious doctor that is said to fulfill his wish. Hamada plays the unpopular young man Takashi, while Kurashina Kana plays the woman he's madly in love with. Tsugawa Masahiko plays the dubious doctor.

Ishii Soichi directed the second story called 'Aru Ji-san ni Senkou wo', in which an old man carries out experiments in order to restore his youth. Sasano plays the old man, while Suda Masaki plays the younger version of him. The heroine is played by AKB48's Miyazawa Sae.

The director of 'Sadako 3D', Hanabusa Tsutomu was responsible for the third story called 'Yuukai Denwamou', starring Mikami, Mimura, Ishimaru Kenjiro, and others. This story is about a married couple running a soba restaurant who end up having to rescue some unknown abducted children.

'Motemote Spray' will become available on August 1st, 'Aru Ji-san ni Senkou wo' on September 1st, and 'Yuukai Denwamou' on October 1st.
