On October 2, veteran actor Otaki Hideji passed away from lung cancer at 87 years of age.
A representative of theater troupe Gekidan Mingei sent a fax to several media outlets stating, "Due to his poor health in February, he canceled his folk art performance in June, and was hospitalized for treatment. In July, he also had complications withpneumonia, but shortly after, his condition was stable and he was discharged. He also regained his appetite, and was receiving treatment at home. According to his family, he joined them for dinner the night before, and even drank his favorite sake. That afternoon, he parted as though he was peacefully sleeping."
Otaki's family also commented, "It's been 8 months since we found out he had lung cancer in February. It was more painful seeing him not able to work than watching his body wear away from the illness. However, meeting reliable doctors and nurses, he was able to live an ordinary life until the very end. He had never spent time with family like that, so he had said that becoming ill wasn't all that bad. He was reading difficult books, but the last book he took into his hand was Akatsuka Fujio's 'Kore de Iino da'. As if he were saying 'kore de iino da' ('this is fine'), he departed with a gentle smile."
Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones.
