Back in May, we reported that famed director Miike Takashi was going to bring CAPCOM’s popular video game franchise, “Gyakuten Saiban” (international title: “Ace Attorney“), to the big screen in the form of a live-action adaptation of the first game in the series. Recently, its official website was updated with a second teaser and a second full trailer.

Filled with numerous special effects to enhance the visuals, this courtroom thriller takes place in an alternate universe, where an increase in heinous crimes has forced Japanese attorneys and prosecutors to confront each other in a new court system that gives the accused only three days to prove their innocence. In this system, speed is favored over hard evidence and forensic science, forcing both the defense and the prosecution to do much of their own hurried investigation before time runs out.

“Gyakuten Saiban” has Narimiya Hiroki starring as the protagonist, ‘Naruhodo Ryuichi’ (or ‘Phoenix Wright’) and Saito Takumi as his rival, prosecutor ‘Mitsurugi Reiji’ (or ‘Miles Edgeworth’). Moreover, we get to see Kiritani Mirei as ‘Ayasato Mayoi’ (or ‘Maya Fey’) and many more characters from the video game.

The trailer also features the film’s theme song “2012 Spark” by Porno Graffitti.

The Japanese gaming industry is gearing up to assist the victims of the tragic earthquake and tsunami by making significant monetary donations. Nintendo and many of the gaming companies have announced their wishes and prayers to the people affected by this devastation.

SONY has announced that they will be donating 300,000,000 yen (approximately 3 million dollars) to disaster relief. SONY is one of many companies that are collecting donations from employees from their companies around the world. On top of this massive donation, SONY has decided to donate 30,000 radios to the victims of this disaster.

SEGA will be donating 200,000,000 yen and have also expressed their wishes to make additional donations at a later time. CAPCOM and BANDAI both have announced a donation of 100,000,000 yen (approximately 1 million dollars) to disaster relief. TECMO KOEI has announced that they will be donating 10,000,000 yen (approximately 125,000 dollars) to the Japanese Red Cross. They have also expressed that they will be taking individual donations and will forward them to the Red Cross.

All gaming companies are showing that they care, and are doing everything they can to help the victims of this tragedy. They have expressed that they are even taking small steps by conserving electricity so that victims will be able to get enough power themselves. They are extending their prayers for the people affected by this disaster.

Are you curious about which games had the longest lines at the Tokyo Game Show?

What I mean by ‘longest line’ is that you’ll wait for about six hours just to play a game demo that lasts for only 20 minutes. Since the Tokyo Game Show is the world’s largest gaming event, you can definitely expect a lot of people coming in just to view the games. It’s highly unfortunate if you’re 30 minutes late after the opening, as it means you won’t have a chance to play anything there.

To cut the long wait hours for ‘Monster Hunter 3‘, Capcom placed approximately 100 kiosks split between single and multi-player modes. They also planned on distributing tickets in another area, so as to not clog the MH3 booth. Fifteen minutes after the opening of the event, long lines snaked around the MH3 booth and tickets were all gone by 11:00.

Other Capcom games that had long lines were ‘Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth 2’, which closed the line temporarily after 11:00, and tickets for ‘Mega Man Universe’ sold out an hour after TGS opened.

For the Level-5 booth, ‘Ni no Kuni’ was the most popular game with 120 plays by 12:00. ‘Inazuma Eleven Strikers’ had a wait time of 80 minutes both for its ‘vs CPU’ and ‘two-player’ mode, and ‘Danbol Senki’ had 40 minute waits.

Namco Bandai also had a long queue right after the opening. ‘Tales of Graces F’ and ‘Tales of Graces Radiant Mythology 3’ had its line temporarily closed by 11:00. ‘Super Robot Wars L’ and ‘Gundam Musou 3’ had players wait for about 90 minutes, while ‘God Eater Burst’ and ‘Solatorobo’ had a 60 minutes wait time each. The ‘idol M@ster 2’ tickets were all sold out 40 minutes after the start of the show.

For Sega, the most popular game was ‘Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity’, whose tickets sold out by 12:10. ‘Valkyria Chronicles 3’ also sourced long lines, as it already had a 2.5 hour waiting line right after the start of the event. Other games that also had long lines were ‘Vanquish PS3’, ‘Vanquish Xbox 360’, ‘Virtual On Force’, ‘K-On’, ‘Shiren the Wanderer 5’, and ‘F1 2010’.

So you think you’re a fan of Square Enix games? Players who aimed at trying Square Enix’s games arrived really early to the event, and some even slept around the TGS vicinity just so they could beat the queue. For this booth, ‘Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy’ tickets were all gone by 10:37, ‘Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep Final Mix’ were sold out by 10:26, ‘The 3rd Birthday’ had 3-hour wait, while the ‘Tactics Ogre’ commanded a 1 hour wait at 10:40 which increased to 2-hours afterwards.

It was reported that the only playable games at the Square Enix’s booth were ‘SaGa 3’ and ‘Lord of Arcana’ which still had 40 to 60 minute waits.

D3 Publisher’s top games were ‘Dream Club Zero’ and ‘Dream Club Portable’ with a 30-minute waiting line after the show.

For Microsoft, Kinect appeared to be quite popular and Microsoft installed four demo stations in its booth. A player was able to select two demos to test at each kiosk, the titles being ‘Adventure’, ‘Sports’, ‘Crossboard 7’, ‘Sonic Free Riders’ and ‘New Brain Training’. By 11:00, the wait line for these stations reached a 200 minute mark.

PC games were not that popular at the TGS this year, but Gamania’s PC games also had long lines. Among the games that had queues were ‘Langrisser Schwarz’, ‘Tiara Concerto’, ‘Divinia’, ‘Reign of Assassins’, ‘Warrior of Dragon’, ‘Soul Captor’ and ‘Hero’.

With this kind of lines, we can expect that people were only able to try 3 or 4 games for the entire day. However, we can also assume that they really enjoyed this event.

“OBJECTION!”

At the Tokyo Game Show, Capcom revealed that they would be releasing a sequel to the popular game, “Gyakuten Kenji” (Ace Attoney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth). During the press conference, they also revealed the sequel’s new characters.

Producer Motohide Eshiro and director Takeshi Yamazaki were present at the event to introduce the game to the press.

More information and the trailer under the cut!

The game will have a new “Logic Chess” mode. Players are not actually required to play chess; it’s more of a background design component. The chess pieces will be used for characters who just won’t reveal their secrets. Like the previous ‘Ace Attorney’ games, players will throw out questions or inquiries from a selection to their opponent. The “chess” part is only used for visual styling wherein the chess piece cracks whenever your opponent’s lies are uncovered, or if Miles Edgeworth asked a wrong question. FYI, Miles Edgeworth is a big chess fan.

Four new characters were also unveiled during the event:

Mikiko Hayami: a reporter

Taro Tanaka: a mysterious ice cream seller

Outeikun: President of the Republic of Zheng Fa

Hakari Mikagami: A female judge (Miles Edgeworth’s new rival)

Just like in the previous AAI:ME game, Miles Edgeworth will be accompanied by Detective Gumshoe and Kay Faraday in cracking the cases. And yes, we can see more actions from Kay Faraday’s ‘Little Thief‘.

‘Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth 2’ release date was originally announced as “TBA”, but during the TGS, it was revealed that the game may be released by Spring 2011. That means international players will have to wait for another year before the game gets translated and released in their region.

The ‘Ace Attorney Investigations’ will be playable this Saturday and on Sunday.
