'Smile Precure!' tops the box office chart, while 'Tsuino Shintaku' opens on fifth, '009 RE:CYBORG' and 'Argo' opens on eighth and tenth place respectively.
The 'Eiga Smile Precure!' anime series still knows how to lure in children and their families for the latest installment 'Eiga Smile Precure! Ehon no Naka wa Minna Chiguhagu!' managed to rank first on the weekend box office chart. It attracted 173,283 people and grossed 192,792,900 Yen (2,415,695 USD) on the first two days. The previous movie, which opened in March, recorded a similar start and grossed a total of 1,030,000,000 Yen (12,884,270 USD).
Second through fourth place are all occupied by movies who had to move down one rank due to the anime. Among them is 'Odoru Daisousasen THE FINAL', which seems to have ran out of new viewers earlier than expected. It has already grossed around 5,600,000,000 Yen (70,168,000 USD), but the weekly revenue has decreased so much that it might not be able to surpass 'Thermae Romae', which grossed 6,000,000,000 Yen (75,054,000 USD).
In fifth place wasSuou Masayuki's new movie 'Tsuino Shintaku' featuring the almost nostalgic pairing of Kusakari Tamiyo and Yakusho Koji in the leading roles. 50,523 people saw it on the weekend and helped it record a revenue of 58,105,600 Yen (728,063 USD). Of course it's a rather slow movie and doesn't really appeal to a younger audience, but they probably still expected a slightly better result.
Production I.G's anime '009 RE:CYBORG', which is the adaptation of Ishinomori Shotaro's 'Cyborg 009' into a modern-day setting, opened on eighth place with 41,901 viewers and a revenue of 69,815,300 Yen (873,319 USD). If we were to look at the revenue only, it would even beat the opening weekend of 'Tsuino Shintaku' in fifth place.
In tenth place was the highly praised American movie 'Argo', which recorded a disappointing 38,663 viewers and revenue of 50,357,600 Yen (629,923 USD).
