Yoshida Akimi's manga "Umimachi Diary" wins the "Manga Taisho 2013"
It was announced that Yoshida Akimi's manga "Umimachi Diary" won this year's "Manga Taisho" (aka "Cartoon Grand Prize").
"Umimachi Diary" is set in an ancient city, Kamakura, and it tells a story of a family's loss and restoration. It is being serialized on Monthly flowers (Shogakukan) irregularly.
The "Manga Taisho" is an annual Manga award which chooses a manga that individuals would recommend to others, and this is the sixth year it has been held. The award is getting recognized more and more every year, as many of the winners from the previous years have been adapted into live-action movies or TV animes.
This year, they targeted the manga books (up to 8 volumes maximum) that were released during January 1st ~ December 31st, 2012, and 11 works were nominated through first and second selections. Then the selection committee members picked their own top 3 mangas after reading all the nominated works, and the grand prize was given to the manga that got the most points based on the selection committee members' rankings (?No.1?3pt, No.2?2pt, No.3?1pt).
