The news of Miyazaki Hayao retiring was only released on Monday, but last weekend his final masterpiece 'Kaze Tachinu' already managed to increase its viewers and weekend revenue compared to the previous week. That was caused by cheaper tickets on Sunday that marked the end of the summer holidays. However, the sudden retirement news might ensure this movie to become an even longer long runner than it already is.
In 2nd place opened 'Man of Steel', which achieved a much better opening weekend result than the most recent 'Star Trek' movie.
Almost out of nowhere, the movie adaptation of the popular anime series 'Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai.' managed to claim a spot in the top 3 as well. Everyone was surprised when they released its results from the opening weekend. After all it only opened on 64 screens nationwide, but it recorded more than 3 million Yen per screen. 'Man of Steel' barely managed to record 440,000 Yen per screen due to its bigger exposure. In other words, all the screenings of the anime must have been packed.
'Sadako 3D 2' only opened in at 6th place. Takimoto Miori and the young Sadako weren't able to keep up with the opening weekend of the prequel in any way and won't have it easy to even reach the 1 billion Yen mark.
