In the '2014 Sochi Winter Olympics', Japanese figure skater Hanyu Yuzuru took home Japan's first ever gold medal for the sport.
In celebration of his win, a parade was held in his honor at his hometown of Sendai City. Over 92,000 citizens cheered him on as the 19-year-old paraded through the city. Before the parade, Murai Yoshihiro (53), the governor of Miyagi Prefecture, awarded Hanyu the 'Prefecture Honorary Citizen Award'.
Hanyu commented, "I am happy that a lot of people have gathered. Four years ago, I would have never thought that I would be able to win gold. I hope that through me, people will always remember those who are still suffering from the 2011 disaster."
Furthermore, he said, "It is a trivial effort, but please use it," donating the contributions to the prefecture and the city.
