On November 20, YOSHIKI (X JAPAN) held an online press conference revealing the details on his worldwide project.
As the music industry worldwide has taken a hit from the COVID-19 pandemic, YOSHIKI wanted to "deliver a message to people around the world that we can overcome any difficulty," so he invited guests from various countries to hold a music event online. Under partnership with YouTube, a program titled 'YOSHIKI: Under The Sky' will broadcast on December 23. So far, there are eleven confirmed artists participating in the event: Marilyn Manson, The Chainsmokers, St. Vincent, Nicole Scherzinger, SUGIZO, HYDE, Jane Zhang, Lindsey Stirling, SixTONES, Scorpions, and Sarah Brightman. More artists will be added to the lineup later.
YOSHIKI was originally involved in producing a YouTube documentary, but it was postponed due to COVID-19. Meanwhile, during a discussion with YouTube, the upcoming music event was decided. Right away, YOSHIKI called his friend Marilyn Manson and asked him to participate. He gave his consent saying, "It's meaningful and worth doing." Afterwards, YOSHIKI contacted artists from all over the world and confirmed appearances by eleven artists.
YOSHIKI mentioned that he is currently working with each artist for a collaboration song. "I hope to make it by December 23..." he said nervously and talked briefly about each artist. He had plans to collaborate with Marilyn Manson, St. Vincent, Lindsey Stirling, and Jane Zhang, but he couldn't announce anything regarding those collaborations because of the coronavirus disaster. While he didn't reveal any details on what was planned, we learned that he had been involved in various projects around the world.
On his collaboration with HYDE, he commented, "Because we collaborated on the theme song for 'Shingeki no Kyojin' ('Attack on Titan'), he willingly accepted [my offer]. Since we talk about a lot of things, I think it was natural that HYDE participated. We will be rearranging a song that everyone knows, so please look forward to it." Regarding SixTONES, he first spelled their name and explained in English the origin of their name. "SixTONES is a sensational group that debuted this year. I've met them a few times, but they are really wonderful people with talent. I produced their debut song, and they will be appearing on this year's 'Kohaku.' I love K-POP's BTS, but I feel like SixTONES will also become a worldwide sensation," he stated. Then on SUGIZO, he expressed, "I can't thank SUGIZO enough. It is all thanks to SUGIZO that X JAPAN reunited. He did not take the place of hide, but is a very important person who joined X JAPAN with the consciousness of 'together with hide.' In the past, he was in a band called S.K.I.N. with MIYAVI and GACKT, but he is a versatile person who knows how to play the guitar and violin. I think it was inevitable that I asked him to join this project."
YOSHIKI was also asked about a world tour to which he responded, "It's a personal opinion, but I am working with an agent in America about a possible world tour in 2022. There might be a single concert in summer of 2021." Finally, he said, "I think this will be the most or second most greatest thing in my life. I have been busier than ever these past six or seven months, and it's going to continue, but the complete version will be out on December 23, so please look forward to it."
