Olympic medalist Fukuhara Ai has started up a new company to promote table tennis.
After retiring from table tennis three years ago, Fukuhara has served as the ambassador of Japan's T-League to help promote the sport. Her company is named 'omusubi,' and she just opened up its office in Tokyo, as well as an official website.
The company first plans to start a table tennis competition for children, called 'Ai-chan Cup,' in Miyagi Prefecture where Fukuhara is from. They will also be donating tables used in the sport to facilities for people with disabilities in Miyagi.
Fukuhara explained that her company is named after the omusubi (rice balls) that her mother used to make which served as a source of her power back in the day. It also represents "creating bonds," which she hopes to accomplish through the company.
She commented, "I want to create an environment where children can make their dreams come true. In particular, I want the people of Miyagi Prefecture to smile, so I hope to give something back through the company."
