On February 3, comedian duo London Boots Ichi-go Ni-go's Tamura Atsushi shared a video on YouTube announcing that he will be declining to run in the Tokyo Olympic torch relay.
In the video, Tamura reported, "I am thinking about declining being the torchbearer. I have taken the official route though my agency in informing the committee." He explained, "I saw an interview by JOC chief Mori where he stated that the Olympics would take place no matter what the situation is with the coronavirus. I thought his remarks were a little incomprehensible."
Tamura continued, "Also, Mori-san recommended that talents run in rice fields with the torch because they cause people to gather. I'm not sure whether or not such remarks are jokes, but I don't think Mori-san has changed from the past in that he says things without thinking. He looks down on people's feelings, and I refuse to do the same." He added, "Talents should run in paddy fields with the torch... I believe that is extremely rude to the farmers who own rice fields. In the first place, we do various jobs with the power to influence. If it's unnecessary for people to gather on the roadside, I felt that talents should back out of it."
Tamura also mentioned that while he hopes that the Olympic will be held in Tokyo, he would like to see it postponed this year.
