On July 8, it was announced that Olympic medalist Fukuhara Ai (32) and Taiwanese table tennis player Chiang Hung-chieh (32) have officially divorced.
In a joint statement, the couple announced, "At this time, we would like to apologize for all of the trouble we have caused as husband and wife. We've had discussions since then, and upon mutual consent, a divorce has been established." They continued, "As for our children, we have joint custody, so we will each do our best in order to reduce the impact on our kids."
Earlier in March, some tabloid magazines reported that Fukuhara was involved in an affair. Soon after, she released a statement of apology and denied the reports. In response to this, they commented, "There have been various reports until now, but this is our problem, and there is immense impact on our children and family, so we would like to ask that you avoid excessive coverage."
Finally, they wrote, "We apologize to everybody that gave us their blessings when we got married, as well as to everybody that we have caused trouble to."
Fukuhara and Chiang tied the knot in September of 2016. They welcomed a daughter in October of 2017, then a son in April of 2019.
