SHEENA & THE ROKKETS's Ayukawa Makoto passes away from pancreatic cancer

TH STAFF

It's been reported that Ayukawa Makoto of SHEENA & THE ROKKETS passed away on January 29 from pancreatic cancer. He was 74 years old.

According to his official website, Ayukawa was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in May of last year. At the time, he was given about five months to live.

Ayukawa didn't want to worry anyone so he didn't disclose his illness; instead he continued performing while secretly receiving treatment. While he was hospitalized late last year due to severe stomach pains, he had been doing his best to recover at home this past month in order to stand on stage again. His wake and funeral will be held in a similar style as his late wife Sheena's "rock funeral" at Shimokitazawa's Shinganji.

Ayukawa was born in 1948 in Kurume City, Fukuoka. He formed the rock band SONHOUSE in 1970, then later SHEENA & THE ROKKETS with his wife in 1978. The band made their debut in October of the same year with the single "Namida no Highway." After his wife passed away from cervical cancer in 2015, Ayukawa continued the band with their original members Nara Toshihiro (G) and Kawashima Kazuhide (Dr). Last November, they celebrated the band's 45th anniversary along with Sheena's birthday at Shinjuku LOFT.

Our deepest condolences go out to Ayukawa's family and friends during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
