GACKT has been announced as part of the upcoming revival of the iconic Japanese period drama Abarenbo Shogun, where he will portray Tokugawa Munenobu, the flamboyant lord of the Owari domain. The series, set to air on January 4, 2025, on TV Asahi, brings a fresh take on the beloved classic.

The original Abarenbō Shōgun followed the adventures of Tokugawa Yoshimune, the eighth shogun, played once again by Ken Matsudaira. Disguised as Tokuda Shinnosuke, the third son of a poor samurai family, Yoshimune worked to root out corruption and injustice among the commoners. The new installment is set over 20 years into Yoshimune's reign, where political turmoil over the succession of the Tokugawa family and conspiracies in the castle town take center stage.

GACKT's character, Munenobu, stands in direct contrast to Yoshimune's frugality. With a belief that "enjoyment and extravagance are key to enriching the people," Munenobu disregards Yoshimune's austerity measures. He brings theater houses and entertainment venues to the Owari domain, drawing widespread admiration from the townsfolk, who even question whether Munenobu might be more fitting as shogun. GACKT’s portrayal is expected to captivate audiences as he appears in striking attire, including flamboyant robes and a 1-meter-long smoking pipe.

Sharing his excitement for the role, GACKT noted the honor of working alongside Ken Matsudaira, stating, “I have watched Abarenbo Shogun since I was young, and being able to co-star with Matsudaira-san is truly an honor. His power and energy remain as incredible as ever.” He further expressed his hope that younger audiences will discover the appeal of period dramas through this revival, saying, “I’d be thrilled if people watch this and think, ‘Jidaigeki can be so much fun.’”

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Takashi Miike and written by Mika Omori, the revival also stars Daigo Nishihata (Naniwa Danshi) as Yoshimune’s son, Ieshige.
