Masahiro Higashide announces month-long 'no contact' survival experiment

TH STAFF

On June 1, Masahiro Higashide announced that he will be unreachable for one month while taking part in what he described as a "mini disaster survival lifestyle" experiment.

In a post on his note account, Higashide wrote that he would be living without electronic devices from June 2 through July 1, adding that anyone wishing to contact him would have to "come directly to the mountains."

Higashide explained that he had recently been spending time hunting, fishing, farming, and gathering wild plants with friends and family, but had also begun thinking about how he would cope if society were suddenly disrupted by a major disaster.

The experiment is based on a hypothetical major earthquake scenario in which utilities and infrastructure, including electricity, water, gas, mobile networks, and supply chains, are no longer available. Higashide said he will rely on stored supplies, gasoline, tools, fishing gear, and other resources while living in isolation with his dog. He also asked friends not to share outside news or weather forecasts if they visit him during the experiment.

Higashide also shared that the experiment was inspired in part by books written by volcanologist Hiroki Kamata and disaster preparedness advisor Tomoya Takani.
