Kyary Pamyu Pamyu has revealed the story behind her unique stage name, including her real first name.

Appearing on the Fuji TV variety show Pokapoka, the singer shared that her real name is Kiriko. She explained that the nickname "Kyary" evolved from her name before she decided to add "Pamyu Pamyu" while working as an amateur model in high school.

At the time, Kyary said she wanted a name that stood out from other well-known "Carries," such as Mariah Carey and the horror film Carrie.

She said she remembered comedian Savanna Yagi's catchphrase "Pamyu" from years earlier and, never expecting her entertainment career to last this long, chose "Kyary Pamyu Pamyu" on a whim

"I never thought I'd be active for this long, so I just wrote 'Kyary Pamyu Pamyu' without putting much thought into it," she said.

Kyary married actor Shono Hayama in 2023, and the couple welcomed their first child in 2024.
