Beloved anime director Satoshi Kon passes away

Anime studio MADHOUSE has recently confirmed the death of their famed director, Satoshi Kon.  Kon, only 46 years old, passed away on Tuesday night of pancreatic cancer.

Studio founder Masao Maruyama had announced on his Twitter that an important director from MADHOUSE had passed away, but it was only recently announced that the director was in fact Satoshi Kon.  The director was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer back in May and was only given several months to live.   Kon’s family will be holding a private funeral closed to the public.

Satoshi has thrilled audiences since he made his directorial film debut in 1997 with Perfect Blue.  He followed up that success with three more feature films, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, and Paprika, as well as the innovative anime series, Paranoia Agent.  Kon had been focusing on his new opus, Yume-Miru Kikai, since 2008, and was still working on it at the time of his death.

MADHOUSE studios has been posting frequent updates on the director’s official website, and they seem committed to releasing his last film in his honor.

Satoshi Kon was a revolutionary director for anime as a genre, and he will certainly be missed by fans, not just in Japan, but all over the world.

The first moment I saw the news, I kept hoping that it was just a cruel rumour by someone T__T I still have yet to watch Perfect Blue!

R.I.P, I hope he’s in another place where he can showcase his creative talents again.

Thank you for reporting on this. He was such a visionary. I really can’t believe he is dead…so young…

Tokyo Godfathers is one of my all time favorite movies, but I love everything from him. I’ll miss him greatly, and I don’t think anime will ever be the same without him, at least for me.

This is the worst news I’ve heard in a long, long time.
It has confirmed my lack of belief in god.

Also, if you haven’t seen Perfect Blue, Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, Millennium Actress or any of his other works; see them now.

Satoshi Kon was one of my favorite anime directors. Perfect Blue was the first movie I ever saw, but Millennium Actress had me hooked. It is one of my favorite all time movies. Tokyo Godfathers was also a favorite. I’m really saddened by this news. I wonder how much Satoshi Kon directed of the last film, I really hope that whoever finishes his project will complete it the way Satoshi Kon would have.

    RIP Satoshi Kon
