Britney Spears cosplays for manga

And it’s a loli manga at that.

Japanese artist, Takeshi Murakami, had American pop star, Britney Spears, pose in several cosplay outfits from a manga. He sees Britney as “combining high fashion with Japanese manga“.

Britney is actually wearing a sukumizu (a navy swimsuit worn by school girls) and a randosel (backpack used by elementary students), both of which are fetish items in Japanese lolicon.

It doesn’t really matter though, because this was actually a political message condemning recent efforts to censor loli manga. Some of you may have already heard that LDP politicians in Japan are trying to get loli manga censored by using Tokyo regional government ordinances to get around the constitutional protections of free speech and art. Naoki Inose, governor of Tokyo, appeared on TV to support the censorship.

Inose displayed some loli manga while on the show, but while censoring certain parts.  The manga he used was “My wife is an elementary schooler!“, and he placed stickers on it to make it look like the scene was more explicit than it really was.  This action made the author of the manga, Seiji Matsuyama, furious, and he joined Murakami in the scheme to have Britney dress up as the character that the politicians were deceitfully co-opting.

If the law is passed, then not will the manga be illegal, but the magazine that Britney appears in will also be considered “unhealthy literature” and “virtual child pornography.”

[Unhealthy literature in Japan: Section 3: Restriction of the Sale of Unhealthy Literature

[...]

2. Items which through age, clothing, accessories, school year, setting, other people’s ages, or voice, seem reminiscent of a person who might be recognised as an under-18 (hereafter called a “a fictional minor”) engaged in, or appearing to be engaged in, sexual activity or activity resembling sexual activity, or which impede the development of healthy sexual faculties in youths, or which might be feared to obstruct the healthy development of youths.]

Neither Britney nor the publishing company were aware of the political message and fetishistic overtones of the costumes used in the photos.

Murakami’s take on the situation, in short: “It’s always been obvious that Japanese manga culture, especially when linked to the erotic, must always be considered as art.”

I really don’t know what to say…. Neither for the manga or Britney’s cosplay…

  • lunatic_pandora

After consideration, I would support the artists; free speech should be free speech.

I agree with the comment bellooww. I will support I guess ^_^ And I cant help but say, britney looks like shes glowing in the firt picture! XD heh. probably photoshop or something ^_^

I agree artists should have free speech, but this isn’t like the artist is speaking out against the government and being censored; we’re talking about child pornography. Even if it is a fictional child, my instinct tells me it’s wrong. I really don’t understand the appeal of underage CHILDREN engaged in sexual acts. It’s not like all lolicon is about romantic relationships too, a lot are about rape/fetish/S&M… If those things were to happen to a real child, most people would find that disgusting. So why then is art featuring that perfectly acceptable? If you want to read hentai, what’s wrong with hentai depicting older individuals? There’s so many wonderful artists out there, so much doujinshi, why is lolicon really necessary?

  • kicha

supporting these artiste is like supporting child,s pornographie, because what is it!!! Sorry but this is disguting

“Neither Britney nor the publishing company were aware of the political message and fetishistic overtones of the costumes used in the photos.”

I feel like someone should have told her/her publishing company what she was getting into…. :S

I really don’t support loli mangas, I find them disturbing, let’s get real, this is not any Hentai manga, this is child pornography for god’s sake :/

  • kensai

It’s about freedom of expression though. Freedom of speech is not really freedom if you only allow what is being said to be said when you agree with it.

I don’t think a majority of us are involved with loli manga, I know i’m not, but the issue here is basically attempting to enforce a thought crime. As in, because they think about it and fantasize about it, they should be arrested for it like they actually committed the crime they are pondering.

Once you go down that slippery slope, it’s difficult to come back. Because at that point, there’s not much logical reason to stop the government from prosecuting from a whole wealth of thought crimes, including things like violent video games, movies, and television shows. Think about it.

Remember, just because you might find something morally reprehensible doesn’t mean it should be made illegal.

  • kensai

Actually, Britney Spears is a great example. How many men fantasized about sexual relations with her when she was an underage pop star in ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’? I bet it’s an awful lot of men around the world judging by the popularity of that music video, no?
    -
Should they all be arrested for it?

OMG. I am very sorry I didnt read the article!!! And now that I had.. VIRTUAL CHILD PORNOGRAPHY?! OMG. I take back what I said about ’supporting’. I just think its wrong. :(

  • Miss.Coffe

VIRTUAL CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OR A REAL CHILD AREN’T THY ALL SOLD TO THE SAME PPL O_o

    IT’S SICK );

  • makaihime

One of the reason why I DON’T support the ban on loli mangas is because what they consider loli isn’t only mangas with kids, but ANY character that LOOKS young/under 18. Even if the person is 30+ in the manga but is drawn childish, its considered loli, which I don’t agree with. It limits artists freedom to express their artistic views.

  • leeches

I really don’t know what to think… I personnaly hate loli manga, but the thing is, and we have to think about this, is that although the concept and the theme might be disgusting it’s VIRTUAL… it’s not real no one is getting armed by this and I think it’s well known fact that the more restrains you put in these kind of things the more people desire them… censoring it won’t do it. if we start censoring this type of things we will ended up in a society without freedom of speech. I mean would you arrested someone just because they draw someone being murdered? I think tempers are a little high because we are talking about children and sexuality and how both should never be mixed, but in the end of the day no one gets hurt with these drawings. and please the britney spears cover? what about it? yeah she’s dressing like a litte kid but she 28 YEARS OLD! there’s tons of men who fantasize about women in school uniforms and cheerleader outfits, it’s stupid and kind of weird but if the women is a responsible adult and likes wearing uniforms, then whatever floats your boat, I guess…

  • babypanda1

    The manga…look gross… I’m an artist too but there’s a line you shouldn’t cross.
    By the way…Britney Spears?! That’s soo~ random…

  • k_k

It’s ridiculous to think that making loli manga illegal is gonna stop the real creeps out there. Let people live out their creepy fantasies in manga and not in the real world. It’s just lines on a piece of paper, no children involved.

  • Chandaru

:( freedome of expressionu say? Don’t you know theres a limit to everything?
theres a red line t everything in life which people should not cross.
Loli manga is one thing that turned me off Japan comepletely.
I ADORE anime and manga, i LOVE j-pop i love the cutlture everything!

  • Music

Artists are free to express what their want but I don’t consider Loli Mangas as beeing an art…just look at these pictures and you will understand what I mean ! We are here confront to children pornography and I can’t support that ! I know that making these mangas illegal won’t stop the real problems but It will help even a little. How can you ban something if people accept it when It’s in a manga ?

  • luv1day_jae18

    Britney + cosplay= Random
From what i saw of the picture of the manga, i’m disturbed, but also by the title.
and when did bookbags become kinky.

  • anglica

I’m glad someone is doing something to crack down on manga artists and those who consume this types of things. What kind of monster would look at or draw innocent children in that way?!!

BTW, Britney Spears is a stupid whore, so while I’m sure she wasn’t aware of the political message she was sending, I’m sure she realized the lolita fetish approach when they gave her the elementary back pack!

  • infiniteLOVEforKpop

*cringes* Britney, Britney, Britney. You don’t have to actually read manga, but you could have at least looked at the pictures to know WTF you’re cosplaying for.

  • Mochiko

ummmm, i’m actually kinda for that law, depending on how far they take it. it’s banned here in the us for obvious reasons–we take SERIOUS issue with child porn. It’s NOT art. It’s disturbing to have anyone view children that way, whether the manga counts as “explicit” or not.

  • http://youtube.com/user/wvrtv Neika

    it looks perverted

  • carinachan6

    lol, britney?
