Horikita Maki’s “Byakuyako” to screen at Berlin Film Festival

It just has been announced that the movie adaption of Higashino Keigo’s novel “Byakuyako” starring Horikita Maki is going to screen at the “61st Berlin International Film Festival” as part of the “Panorama” category.

Next to Cannes and Venice, the Berlin Film Festival is one of the three biggest and most important film festivals in the world. The “Panorama” category always features various works from worldwide directors that are expected to emerge on the global market. Last year Yukisada Isao’s “Parade” won the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) Award at the Berlin Film Festival.

This year more than 2,500 movies had once again been nominated for a possible display at the festival. Today the committee has chosen the final 50 that will actually have the chance to be present in Berlin and Japan has made it on the list again with “Byakuyako”.

Horikita, who is actually big fan of the original novel as well, was clearly delighted about the happy news. “I’m really excited that ‘Byakuyako’ has been chosen for Berlin Film Festival now,” she said.

Further she added, “It has been the most challenging movie for me so far and I’ve never been so determined about a project. We’ve put our heart and soul into this movie and I’m very happy that more people in the world will be able to watch it now.”

Director Fukagawa Yoshihiro was completely overwhelmed as well. “I was so excited when I received the letter from Berlin that I myself wondered what’s wrong with me. I’ve looked at my colleagues and tears flooded in my eyes.”

In Japan the movie is going to open on January 29th.

I’m so happy for Maki and everyone involved in this movie! I wonder if Maki will walk on the carpet again, this time in Berlin instead! =D

I wonder if her acting will be able to match up to Haruka Ayase’s acting. Remember that there is only so much one can do in around 2 hours, so Maki has to be more than perfect in her role. Byakuyako (drama) was extremely good. I wonder how they will condense so much into a movie. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her act as an evil person portrayed as good, or tragically evil to be precise. If this is her first, then this movie, if its good, will open new roads in her career. Very important movie for her career. But if there is a movie or drama that she is a bad person, respond to me because I want to see her act in one.

Try ‘Tokujo Kabachi!!’, story wise is just average but Maki’s role is interesting. for movie, I recommend ‘Tokyo Boy’, but again it’s not thaaaat evil, but her acting really shines here.

I already watched both. Both roles are a completely different genre than Byakuyako. Although her role as “Night” in Tokyo Boy was interesting, her character in Byakuyako expresses her feelings a lot with sharing pain. Night just kept his pain to himself so he just looked pissed off and in pain all the time until the end. It doesn’t really take much skill to act pissed off, but it does take skill to switch roles instantly, and that is what made her shine in my opinion.

So that is why Byakuyako is important as it opens up a new roles in her career. I really hope it succeeds.

The similarity between those roles for me are they’re not your innocent goodie types, of course they’re not the same as Yukiho. Otherwise they wouldn’t have been saying this is Maki’s first villain role ;) I think all her roles contribute something to her acting growth, demand her a certain quality, understanding to perform each role. So can’t say one is easier than other or unnecessary ^^

Byakuyakou sure will open new paths for her career. At least some people will stop sticking her along with innocent image (even though I don’t get it)
