Narimiya Hiroki "becomes" Ozaki Yutaka in recording session for drama special

allkpop

The short life of singer-songwriter Ozaki Yutaka, who died suddenly in 1992 at the age of 26, will be dramatized for the first time on the TV Tokyo production, Kaze no shounen ~ Ozaki Yutaka eien no densetsu.

Filming for the show began in a Tokyo studio on February 22nd, and actor Narimiya Hiroki, who stars as Ozaki, underwent an impressive transformation to reproduce the singers distinctive look. Im nervous. My shirt is tucked into my pants, and the pockets are always in the wrong place, he said, grinning. Prior to filming, he completed his first-ever recording session with Ozakis longtime producer,Sudo Akira, in order to get psyched up for the role. It was magical. I felt like I became Ozaki-san. I feel like making this recording was the first step in preparing to play this part.

Nearly twenty years have passed since Ozakis death, and based on meticulous fact-finding and testimonies, the drama special will provide an authentic account of the singers true self, which he never had the chance to display. Using producer Sudos Memoirs of Ozaki Yutaka as reference material, the drama will convey the sincerity of Ozakis way of life, while also painting an accurate portrait of the era.

Previously, Sudo hadnt felt anyone was capable of playing the role of Ozaki, and didnt see a reason to adapt the story for television. However, he expressed that, "If Narimiya does it, I think the show will go quite well. Im happy about it."

At first, Narimiya wavered at the thought of playing the huge star. I felt like the hurdles might be too high, and I wondered whether I could even do it. But, entering his eleventh year in the entertainment world, he decided to step up and accept the challenge. What kind of role should I take if I want to keep going strong for another ten years? Why not take on the part of Ozaki-san?

As filming has now commenced, Narimiya admits: No matter how much Ive prepared, theres still some uncertainty. Im in the trial-and-error phase. But at the same time, its so much fun I feel like this is acting. With a smile, he added: Ive always wanted to take a more unpredictable job. Its a great feeling to be at that point right now.

During the pre-shoot recording session, Narimiya belted out several of Ozakis big hits: I LOVE YOU, Dance Hall, and Sotsugyou. Standing by in studio, producer Sudo gave the performance rave reviews: There is a great amount of expressive power in these tracks. I think theyre quite good.

Narimiya found one aspect of his session with the master very surprising though, I showed up to the studio and got going immediately. I had this impression that you sing each track about a hundred times to get it right, but I only did three takes. Still, Sudo says that midway through the session, The performance became real... I want these genuinely made songs to be heard. As a result, per his request, Chaku Uta versions of the three tracks will be released on March 19th, with Chaku Uta Full versions released two days later on the 21st.

The BS Japan Ten Year Anniversary Special, Ozaki Yutaka 20thMemorial Years Special Project Kaze no Shounen ~ Ozaki Yutaka Towa no Densetsu, will air March 21stat 8:54 PM. On the day before, a documentary titled, Hounetsu no Kanata ~ Ozaki Yutaka Shirarezaru Densetsu, is also set to air. The program will depict Ozakis lifestyle, and will feature many people influenced by his music.
