Idol group PASSPO debuts at the top of the Oricon charts

Idol group PASSPO made their major label debut with their single “Shoujo Hikou” on May 4th, taking the top spot on the single ranking chart.

According to the Oricon Single Ranking chart for May 16th, “Shoujo Hikou” has sold 43,000 units since its release less than a week ago, placing the cabin attendant-themed group at the top of the weekly chart. This marks the first time that a female idol group has taken first place on the charts with their debut single since pop duo Kiroro released “Nagai Aida” in 1998 – over thirteen years ago.

“I’m so happy that we had such a nice takeoff,” said captain Negishi Ai about the group’s success. “We’re truly grateful to our passengers (fans). From now on, we’ll do our best to not forget our rookie attitudes as we hold onto our aspirations and ride this updraft.”

Congratulations to PASSPO on their achievement!

! Flying to all over the world!!!

  • nss7

I like this group. They sound different than other idol group. I’m sure they will become the next big thing in japanese idol industry.

  • setsuka

Yes,anyone but MBLAQ would be fine

but their airline talk is cute.

  • blue3

    great news! :)

  • Anonymous

    jeez at the comments about it not being mblaq -_-;

But yeah congrats, I may go and give this a listen now~

  • http://twitter.com/_RY0 大渡 亮

I not a fan, but I prefer than to mblaq in the 1st

  • Ueno

    Yu not a fan?

    cool story /b/ro

  • MonAmi

Another idol on top, not surprised.

Anyone youtubed Kiroro btw? Cause they don’t sound very idol to me…

  • nss7

Me too. I dont think Kiroro considered as idol. They kinda like female version of Kobukuro. I think it should be ‘female group’ not ‘female idol group’.

  • Anonymous

Well its only a few ppl. And its only cuz they’re Korean.
Anyway, i really like this idol group; something about them feels different.

  • Anonymous

It should just say “female group” :O

  • wuyingying

Great feat selling 40k+ copies for a debuted single! And why hating on mblaq? Their sales are very close too to them and it is their first Japanese single

  • nss7

No one hate MBLAQ. Jpop fan just dont want to see another kpop group topping oricon chart.

  • SNSDism

lol so many airplane metaphors ~

    congrats! :D

  • Redder

Jpop fans just don’t want to see Korean media articles exclaim how glorious and phenomenal kpops are when they are in such a good rank despite not-that-much sales.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1173575658 Kelvin Yong

    congrats~!! :D
geez at the people commenting about mblaq…what had happened to the jpop fans that were nice and dont put-down people? :( (im not being biased here as i hav been a jpop fans for a looooooong time xD)

  • parkgyuriftw

The girl 3rd from the top looks caucasian in this picture. Not mixed, straight up white.

  • eyeless

    Congrats Passpo!
I’m happy they can outsell mblaq. It’s one week with highest possibility for both group at getting #1 on Oricon chart and Passpo can make it after a tough fight.

Next time both group want to get another #1, they have to sell a lot better than this.

  • Ueno

    @Redder – QFT QFT QFT

  • JustObserving

Congratulations for the spot. Felt sorry for MBLAQ because I somehow like them since they are Rain’s proteges :D

  • 2-N

It’s so sad that racism is still alive. “Yes, they’re Korean, so let’s hope they fail.” I am an MBLAQ fan, but I’m also a fan of other singers and musician all across the world. Music shouldn’t be racist.

It’s people like you who have bad karma, to be honest.

  • Redder

Or pick the right date to release, like this time.

  • eyeless

We love Passpo and happy because they outsell mblaq thus make us racist?? Wtf? No one even bash mblaq here fgs.

  • Rose2

Okay First who brought MBLAQ into this conversation ! This article is about PASSPO only and no one else !

Number two people need to stop quoting things that no one have said!

Third I can understand some Jpop fans (Tokyohive members ) are annoyed when people from a certain music community (AKP members) claim that Kpop groups is going to take over Jpop !

However we must conduct ourselves in a proper manner !

  • Anonymous

Nobody said abt wanting them to fail. They just want their fav group to top the charts. I mean who doesn’t? Tho I feel that the success of a group or a singer should not be gauged based on whether they “topped” a chart or not. There are many artistes who find popularity and success elsewhere but at the same time they don’t top charts. What exactly do you say about these artistes?

  • choisunghee443

I find that they don’t dislike the groups themselves as much as obnoxious fans.

For example, nobody below said that MBLAQ sucked or anything.

  • choisunghee443

Don’t think anybody rational really believes that.

After TVXQ fell apart, the only group in Japan with legit popularity left is KARA, I think.

BoA, I guess, but she’s messing around in America. Korean actors are still more popular, IMO.

  • Rose2

    sorry what is IMO?

  • nss7

    In My Opinion

  • Rose2

    Okay thanks nss7 lol I don’t text alot !

  • blackdevil2722

I’m happy for PASSPO’s success. They do look like quite the promising group. ^^

& as for those whom are saying some of us Jpop fans are hating on MBLAQ, please. Is it wrong that Jpop fans at TOKYOHIVE would prefer a Japanese idol group to top over a Korean band? We’ve all got our preferences but it’s not hate. If you want to hear about fans hoping for Korean artists to triumph over Jpop groups, be my guest & go to AKP.

  • nss7

That what i want to say. Sorry for misunderstood you and all tokyohive user. I’m sorry for making jpop fan looks like kpop hater.

  • 2-N

You shouldn’t even try to make it appear as if it isn’t what I say it is. Sure, you can not like MBLAQ — there’s nothing wrong with that. However, putting down a group like MBLAQ merely because of “Korean articles putting them over” is discriminatory no matter how you slice it.

There’s many who boast “Oh, the JPOP community isn’t as bad as the KPOP community when it comes to groups and such,” well they’re wrong. Pick your poison.

To me it doesn’t matter where they’re from as long as its girls. I’m sick of male domination. That’s why I was upset SNSD didn’t make it last week. I don’t listen to PASSPO or MBLAQ but PASSPO had my prayers this week since they are females. No offense to males I’m just presently seeking a change in Oricon as so many men top it in comparison to women. I’m in a Girl Power state of mind at the moment.

Stop reading in between the lines.I don’t know how you came to that conclusion . How I read that comment was sometimes (Some not all) Korean Media tend to exaggerate on their K pop idol groups accomplishments.

For example AKP wrote an article “Super Junior -M repackaged “TooPerfect”sweeps Taiwanese ablum charts” where I saw on another webiste “A-Mei Chang holds number 1 spot against Super Junior M.”

Second of all read a couple of articles before you make a judgement on the JPOP community on Tokyohive or another website. Don’t generalize the whole community base off of a couple of comments now that discriminatory.

Even if I’m reading in between the lines, you can’t deny that the JPOP community has been just as what I said them to be. I get it. There’s a massive influx of KPOP acts debuting in Japan — however, you shouldn’t hate them for it. They’re not invading, they’re being welcomed. If your favorite JPOP acts decided to debut in America, would it be different? It’s a bias/ignorance going on.

Take a chill pill, nobody said anything about hating them. MBLAQ made it to the 2nd spot on the oricon chart, nuff said.

You can’t base the whole of the J-pop community based on a couple of comments on here, from what I’ve seen, the J-pop community is more tamed compared to the K-pop community.

Of course they’re being welcomed, none can say otherwise. It’s the comment that the fans put out like “K-pop is taking over Japan” is what’s upsetting people over here.

  • choisunghee443

If Japanese media claimed that J-pop/J-rock was taking over America and that Japanese music was vastly superior to American music, I can guarantee you that Americans would not take kindly to that.

    We never do.

In a nutshell, that is the thing most J-pop fans seem to complain about. Like I said, the attitude, not the actual groups.

AKP users actively bash Japanese idols. It’s different.
