Which manga was best adapted into a live action drama?

It has become a recent trend within the past couple of years for popular manga series to be adapted into a live action drama. Manga series have rich story lines, but because most fans have strong impressions of the manga they commonly are disappointed with the result of a live action adaptation. Of course there’s many exceptions to this and ORICON STYLE polled 1,000 people and asked the question, “Which manga was best adapted into a live action drama?

Popular music manga, ‘Nodame Cantabile‘ starring Ueno Juri and Tamaki Hiroshi ranked number one in the poll. The comical essence of the drama on top of the real orchestra performances was more than people expected.

‘Nodame Cantabile’ is a manga written by Ninomiya Tomoko, and follows the story of a strange yet very talented pianist named “Nodame” as well as the people she associates with in this musical comedy. A poll taker commented, “The acting of the cast members playing these unique characters perfectly matched” proving that the exquisite casting did justice even to a fan of the original manga. However, the performance scenes, which the cast learned and practiced for, was the main thing that impressed everyone. What could not be brought to life in the manga was made a reality through the drama series bringing out the music within the story. Nodame Cantabile brought about the “classical music boom” and changed the impression and stereotype of classical music.

The second manga chosen by fans was the teen love story of  ’Hana Yori Dango‘ by Kamio Yok. The manga itself is very popular internationally and has been adapted into a drama even in the neighboring country of South Korea. In the Japanese adaptation Inoue Mao plays the character of Makino Tsukushi, a strong willed and sturdy young girl, and Arashi’s Matsumoto Jun plays the character of Domyouji Tsukasa, a high and mighty heir to a major corporation. The chemistry between the duo was brilliantly brought to life just like it is in the manga. A poll taker remarks, “There were parts that were slightly different from the manga, but as a drama it was very amusing“. After it’s airtime in 2005, the series came back with a sequel and even released a movie.

The medical history manga series that sold 6,800,000 copies in total, ‘JIN‘,  ranked in third place. JIN follows the story of Dr. Minakata Jin, played by Osawa Takao, who goes back to a time where medical practices were not highly advanced and learns the preciousness of life. This year in May it won the “15th Tezuka Osamu Bunka-sho Manga-sho” and has also received much praise. The realistic surgery scenes and the historical being incorporated into the story “made it exciting to watch the following week.” The series, loved by both men and women, finished it’s final episode with an average viewership rating of 26.1% and was praised with satisfaction.

When it comes to manga series being adapted into live action dramas, fans become very strict and critical. Although the popularity of the manga could mean it’ll become a hot topic, but it could also mean that with one mistake the drama will be referred to as a bad drama. In the midst of that pressure, the top 10 dramas below have been adapted well enough to receive the approval of many fans and may even be considered “masterpieces”. With this increasing trend in bringing manga characters to life, it will be exciting to see which character will be next to appear on the television screen in live action.

Check out the top 10 for “Which manga was best adapted into a live action drama?” and leave a comment below!

HanaDan<3 well, I love most of the dramas included on this list but of course, its Mao and Matsujun's performance in Hanadan that I won't definitely forget. Lot of people says that the story is cheesy but for me, it's not just about story itself but how the actors were able to portray their characters just like what is in the manga. Matsujun may not have all the features of Domyouji (esp being the tallest in F4 in the manga) but he's acting totally made the fans forget about it and convinced most that he's Domyouji.

Hanadan is my ultimate fav. drama of all time<3
I really liked how Jun portrayed Tsukasa's character and even though the story was kinda shuffled around here and there, they did a great job putting it together^^

OMG this. I’d really love it and would definitely watch it if they do a remake of Glass Mask. Not that the original was bad, just that the costume/setting wasn’t as glamorous as in the manga. I liked it though but some of the actors didn’t impress me. Yumi did a great job as Kitajima Maya by the way. Her appearance really fitted the role and her acting was equally good.

  • Rubyy

Totally agree with Nodame, HYD, JIN & Gokusen! These 4 will forever be some of my absolute fave Jdramas :D

I can’t comment since I haven’t read the manga for any of these so… I would like to read them first before saying a more adequate opinion of which one was the best adaption from a manga. Though I can say that Nodame was my favorite on this list ^^ HYD is too cheesey and the characters really weren’t for my liking (just my opinion on it) I still do wanna see GTO, and thanks to ROOKIES I’ve learned of other great male actors…. Ishihara, Takeru, Shunji… #^^#

“The comical essence of the drama on top of the real orchestra performances was more than people expected.”

Well duh. That happens when you use real orchestras, derps. Still, Tamaki was lousy at pretending to be a conductor. No feeling for the music, none at all. He was so wooden when pretending to conduct. And I can’t say I was too impressed with Ueno either. The only reason to watch it was really the music. And sadly the series did nothing to dispell the usual BS about classical music: that people tend to say “it’s serious/grave/solemn music” (mainly because of the rather official nature of concerts.) No you derps, it’s not. There’s so much life in it, yet the series failed to bring that over. It’s one of the reasons why I hate to go to concerts. The orchestra plays one of, let’s say, Dvorak’s dances and people sit in the audience as if it was a funeral and the vast majority of the audience fails to get infected by the spirit and life of the music. Which is actually quite sad.

Hana Yori Dango, didn’t care about it. Saw two episodes. The plot, if I can even call it that, was just… you know what I always say. Kitten + headbutt.

JIN, oh yeah! But I’m still sad they didn’t do a tribute to the Doctor in the final episode of the series. Would it have been too much to hear the TARDIS coming in and maybe see the Doctor’s sneakers as he steps out of her? And then fade to black. I doubt the BBC would complain. Such a missed opportunity. I mean, without the Doctor, what time travel stories would there be? Not many. Remember, the Doctor has been running since 1963.

    Definitely Nodame!!

  • Boya-monkae

Oh, now I really wanna watch Nodame~ But I agree with Hana Yori Dango, damn that was a good live action adaption!

  • AnNguyen

I’ve watched both Nodame, HanaDan and Jin and they most definitely were living up to the manga! They were really good and followed the plot very well. GTO and Rookies are also great. But I do think LIAR GAME is missing from the list.. It’s one of my favs and the cast did a great job to portray their characters. I guess it’s because there were quite a few differences between the manga and the live drama that it didn’t make the list.
I’m surprised that Hana Kimi didn’t make it since it’s quite popular

  • Anonymous

OMG! Kindaichi! I didn’t expect to see it on the list, but it made into the top 5!
Love the manga & the drama! Season 1 & 2 are definitely the best!

  • blank_stare

Hana Yori Dango 2! and Gokusen is 3! yeah oh yeah!

  • Puolukka

Nodame Cantabile sure is good drama~

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HFB7STNQFKVIG2LFJW7HLE4S5Q Mr

nodame cantabile…! the best live action dorama…! it’s really fun to watch the orchestra from manga into the “real” one~

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HQW6HMYU47BBI2NL2P5DO6UURY **** the world!!

Actually I seem to remember some scenes in nodame cantabile that completely dispelled the BS you say people stereotype about classical music, at least imo.
    - The Rhapsody in Blue performance
    - The Beethoven Symphony no.7 performance
(both the concert and nodame’s version on piano)
    - and actually most scenes where nodame plays piano

    I do agree Tamaki’s conducting was…not the best >.>
but the show was happy and had happy performances when needed and it was sad and had sad performances that fit the overall mood at that time of the show.
What I don’t get is your point about “the audience fails to get infected by the spirit and life of the music…”
how do you know that? What are they supposed to dance around in joy or something? I fully appreciate classical music (since I am a player of it as well) but I am always very still and quiet during concerts so people can appreciate the music without distraction.
and another thing, a lot of classical music IS “serious/grave/solemn music” and it’s beautiful.

no wonder Nodame wins~ I think it’s the best adaptation from manga to live action! it’s full of comical-type expression. I never expect the would make effect when Nodame got hit by Shinichi, wahahhahaha~ I believe when you watch something, sure you’ll expect something, and I think Nodame is a nice example for succesfully brings the manga to live. I get the music quite wonderful, and I got myself cried over some pieces @_@
