Minato Kanae’s “Shokuzai” to get live-action drama adaptation

The third work of Minato Kanae, ‘Shokuzai‘ will be brought to life with a live-action drama. Minato Kanae is best known for writing the novel ‘Kokuhaku‘ which was brought to life on the silver screen and starred Matsu Takako. The live action drama will be directed by Kurosawa Kiyoshi, who has a history of producing films that have been sent to the Cannes International Film Festival. The drama is slated to air next January on WOWOW.

After making her debut with ‘Kokuhaku’, which sold over 2 million copies, Minato Kanae has become a popular novelist. Her debut work received the Bookshop Award. Her third work, ‘Shokuzai’ sheds light on the darkness of the heart following the murder of a elementary school student. It explores the question, “What is atonement?” and follows the four students that witness the murder, but cannot remember the face of the killer. The fear of the darkness within the heart is what makes this story so unique.

The full cast has not been revealed at this time so it will be interesting to see who will play the other characters. After producing such a powerful movie and winning the Japan Academy Award with “Kokuhaku”, we can definitely expect another work that will explore the ugly side of the human heart that’ll knock our socks off.
