allkpop

Actor Mukai Osamu held a press conference on September 13th for members of the foreign press at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan. This event centered around Mukai's upcoming movie, 'Bokutachi wa Sekai wo Kaerukotoga Dekinai But We Wann Build a School in Cambodia'. 70 press members from around the world were present to listen to Mukai Osamu deliver a very fluent speech in English.

Mukai began, "This movie is based on a true story and not only does it picture the ways that schools are built in Cambodia, but also carries compassion as one of its major themes. I hope you enjoy this movie."

When asked about what he would do if he got an offer from Hollywood, Mukai responded, "Right now, I don't think my English is fluent enough, so I don't it's time yet. I think it's important to have your eyes set on the world. There are many things you see when you interact with people around the world, and I have an interest in foreign countries so I guess when the timing is right, I will go for it."

This movie is based on the self-published essay of the same title. After seeing a international support pamphlet saying, "With your 1,500,000 yen donation, a school with five classrooms can be built in Cambodia," 'Yuta' (played by Mukai) and his friends set out on a journey to build a school in Cambodia. Through their volunteers efforts, they're able to reflect on their own society. Mukai was joined by fellow actors Matsuzaki Tori, Emoto Tasuke, Kubota Masataka, and Murakawa Eri in this film.

Mukai revealed that he's been to Cambodia once before for TBS's show, 'Sekai Ururun Taizaiki'.

He revealed, "I did a home-stay in Cambodia four years ago and I have a second family there. I feel that I didn't choose to be in this movie, this movie chose me to be in it." With this comment, producer Kondo Masatake remarked, "Mukai's casting wasn't the best choice for the role -- he was the only one that could do this role."

Through this film, Mukai mentioned that his attitude towards volunteering has changed. He commented, "I realized that complacency is okay. Doing something for others is better than doing something for yourself, and like looking at a child's smile, you receive awards intangible rewards mentally and emotionally, rather than a tangible object".

He remarked, "I'm not trying to say that I want to change Japan, but there's something Japan is lacking and I strongly feel that something that will compensate us lies in Cambodia."

During the press conference, Mukai experienced many questions being thrown at him from all directions by both members of the press and foreign exchange students who were his fans. It's said that he handled himself smoothly and impressed everyone attending the conference.

Mukai's new movie, 'Bokutachi wa Sekai wo Kaerukotoga Dekinai But We Wann Build a School in Cambodia' hits theaters on September 23rd. In the meantime, check out some photos from the event below!
