Japan’s favorite artists named by 20,000 people

Weekly entertainment magazine “Only★Star” has revealed its 8th “20,000 Music Fans Select Their Favorite Artist Ranking”.

As expected, Arashi kept their position from last year, coming in at #1 for two consecutive years. Additionally, this year also saw some big leaps. Popular for their hit songs and infamous “Senbatsu General Election”, the girls of AKB48 jumped from #30 to #11. Meanwhile, Perfume jumped from #28 to #20 with their movie and CM appearances, marking  their first time in the Top 20.

wow PR survey by Oricon, a lot of those “favorite” artists couldn’t even reach the level that Arashi sells yet they are also above AKB48?

so who paid for this survey?

  • jojolala

    ppl love their variety shows

  • anyeeM229

arashi ranks top 5 even among people in their 40s. that takes charms. honestly, their visual ranks low among idols, especially compared to new korean boy groups (frickin’ mannequins..). but all 5 members have such distinct and charming personalities. national idols ftw! i would call them the japanese tvxq if tvxq hadn’t disbanded. arashi will go on for years like smap. my children shall watch your programs. god bless.

  • beltofvenus

    Huh?
Mr. Children, Fukuyama Masaharu, Utada Hikaru, B’z, DREAMS COME TRUE, Southern All Star etc sell more than Arashi, and they’ve been in the industry for so many years. No doubt all the names mentioned above are ‘favourite’

  • beltofvenus

Happy to see the ‘veterans’ are on the list.
Forever a fan of Mr. Children and Fukuyama Masaharu <3

  • http://profiles.google.com/shadowpal2 Déjà D’être

I don’t get what people are complaining about…regarding Arashi being #1. Yes…they might not sell as much as some other artists do, but the people taking these surveys don’t just consider “sales/music quality” and those kinds of technical stuff.

Either way it doesn’t really matter who Japan’s “#1 favorite artist” is…the artists listed on this list are truly a wonderful bunch. I just love the variety in their choices.

  • Anonymous

oh, i just noticed arashi has their own show. and they each have a unique, and a funny personality. i guess that’s the important reason why ppl love them…. cool~

  • Anonymous

doesn’t arashi sell a lot among the boy groups? in japan? i heard they sold over 600,000 for lotus…. tats a lot, and average sales for arashi….

  • http://profiles.google.com/shadowpal2 Déjà D’être

yea it really is! but apparently to some commenters here…that’s not enough. 1.3 million is what it takes to be “a lot” hahaha. AKB48 is cool and all…but it takes much more work to reach that mark as you got to have a lot of “fan service.”

  • mimi-lonely

Just some info for you: B’z sold over 75 million CDs so far, Mr.Children over 50 million, DREAMS COME TRUE over 40 million… While AKB48 just passed 10 million mark some days ago.

  • zazaza

Well, Arashi had their 2009 and 2010 albums in the world yearly charts selling more than a million copies of their albums, and they still hold the record for artist with most DVDs sold. They have huge achievements too, I wonder why people conveniently forget that…

  • zazaza

Where have you been the past two years? Arashi has always been this popular, it’s just that they were quite low-profile in the early part of 2011 and the news got saturated with AKB48/EXILE stuff instead. They recently got busy again a few months ago.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=750740725 Sabrina Muslima Shaw

Kpop stars have apparently taken over Japan, but not the Japanese peoples hearts.

They have to try a lot harder to be as well loved as these artists.

  • bangs1987

    Yay Arashi ^_____________^

  • kanonn

ARASHIII, as expected!! Still in the top of their game. Really proud to be a fan! ^^ y’all must have been new to Jpop not to know the artist listed here. Mr Children , Hikki, B’z, etc  have been super popular since i can remember. most of them , including Arashi, appeals to people from all ages. Heck, even my friend’s mothers in Jpn wants to tag along to watch their concerts. LOL.
AKB since formed only appeal to male teens.. only last year and this year that they become so popular. but i doubt they will appeal to older audience since they still rely heavily on fan service.. and again , their number of sales, is still heavily influenced by otakus who can afford buying multiple copies at once..
but since, they are so popular rite now, i believe next year they should be able to branch to to other activities and spread their charms to a more general public. wish them luck ^^

  • kanonn

i dun think Kpop artist will be that much liked by the Japanese people. Well probably except, BOA, tvxq, and soon to be KARA… Hallyu wave have always been considered a trend in Japan. something that you’re into this season but not sure whether it lasts..

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1173575658 Kelvin Yong

congrats for AKB!! and i thought some people said that their fans are all old perverts… -.-

and of course Arashi would be #1!!

  • zazaza

Well AKB48 started with a niche market (the Akihabara crowd) but recently they’ve managed to appeal more to the masses. Good for them.

  • kanonn

LoL . you’re definitely new to Jpop

they are great actors especially  Nino and Jun
they are pretty decent singers and dancers( not amazing)
but the 5 make it work :D
inspiring lyrics and catchy upbeat songs(but they have soo many varieties as well)
fans love their togetherness and closeness  and how they can make them laugh.
Even though they are Idols they are not afraid of showing their weakness or making a total idiot of themselves in fact they end up laughing about it

    Yay Hikki <3
a little surprised that Ayumi isn't up there lol Dont worry Ayu I still love you haha
and what About Kumi? still there's some great artists on this list (^^)

  • tsarina

Congrats Arashi! I’m surprised they’ve stayed so relevant in Japan for so long. <3
Also, interesting that Hikki is still high up even though her only recent release was one single and she's declared a hiatus. But please come back soooon~
Yayyy, Namie Amuro and Perfume~!! <333  Two faves~
I can understand not seeing Koda there…I love her to death, but I think she may be even a little too strong and erotic for the general Japanese public, haha.
Surprised to not see Ayu there though. I'm not a huge fan, but I was under the impression she was THE thing in Japan. Guess her popularity is dying a bit. -shrug-

Arashi gets great sales for their Meikyuu single
Arashi are hosting Kohaku for the second time in a row
Arashi won Oricon’s Favourite Artist two times in a row
Sho’s current drama is doing well with the ratings
Jun’s current play is getting full houses, standing ovations and great reviews from critics
Nino just won an award for best actor for Tokyo Drama Awards
Ohno just got his face plastered on a freaking plane!!!
Aiba got best Jeanist award and is navigator of 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics for 3 consecutive years

They’re doing well with both solo and group projects~

  • zazaza

I’m sorry if these artists are too flawless for you~ And Hikki, Bz and Namie are forever relevant.

  • zazaza

    OMG. Best Cyzo rumor/article ever.

  • kikola

Not everyone on there is boring, i love those three. just overall i get bored of most of the people there. And no Kumi or Ayu either? Two of the best in Japan imo.

Though surprised not to see any JE other than Arashi. By the way some talk about them here their supposed to be Japan’s icons.

  • setsuka

    my point exactly

Jpop was great 10 years ago in terms of talent and success but now look, stuck same people ten years ago

there are PLENTY of awesome new aritst, but Japan don’t currrr for them anymore which sucks

I doubt we will see another Ayu,Utada anytime soon with large success early

  • zazaza

I guess it’s because it’s polled within a very large age group (teens to 40s), so the artists must appeal to the masses. Too radical or controversial artists may not be too popular with the older people…

I’m also surprised that Ayu didn’t make the top 10, even though I still like Namie’s songs over Ayu’s.

Out of curiosity, what is your idea of a ‘good list’? Share with us.

  • Misono66

the only additions to that list for me personally would be Ayumi and Kuu-Chan( well I understand why she’s not but still she’d be in my top 20)
apart from that I think its a really good list, a good mix of young and Mature age artists.
If the list is THAT bad to you then how about you come up with a list?
please… do share with the rest of us!!

of course id Love Misono to be up there aswell but well.. she’s an acquired taste♥ lol

  • nss7

No KPOP. I’m actually expect TVXQ or KARA to make it. Hope delusional kpop fan can stop talking about dominate japan. Bookmark this page and everytime they mention about dominate japan show them this.

I’m surprised SMAP, EXILE and Ayumi not among top 20. Arashi is really famous. No wonder they choosen to host Kouhaku. I’m happy AKB jumped from 30 to 11. Hope hater can stop saying majority of their fans is old man. Perfume also did very well. Hikki, Mr.Children, Southern all star release nothing but still loved by many people.

  • dumb_wish_to_be _come_true

  • http://twitter.com/hazel_darlene Darlene Hazel

yeah!!!!! achieving 400,000 and above is already hard to achieve in singles sales

  • OrangeEtzer

Wow, Hikki is still very popular even after announcing a hiatus. I hope she comes back soon. :)

Count me as one of the people surprised to not find Ayu on the list. I always assumed she was like Japan’s diva; you know always on top… Also,  I thought EXILE was very popular, too.

  • http://twitter.com/hazel_darlene Darlene Hazel

@6th-bbaefff50c9ca3c0b538d67377159265:disqus IA!!!!!! its not about the singles and like what I have said before >…<

  • blank_stare

Well it has to do with the fact that the groups are Japanese and are ask by Japanese civilians their all time favorite. I mean to say was would S.Korea citizens vote for Japanese groups as their all time favorite when they have their favorite on their own soil all the time. Never leaving the country except for concerts outside. (Yeah while Kpop tries to “dominate” the world. More like spread the virus.)

  • brontesaurus

    “Spread the virus”

@6th-6913ad0c30493564557099e6da52936a:disqus  But TVXQ still commands high sales, like with Tone. xD Maybe KARA, but they’re pretty new. Maybe in another 2-3 years (by which time the hallyu wave would have dies out xD Hopefully LMAO)

  • imoyaki

OH YES! Utada is so amazing too! :D

  • blank_stare

Ayu isn’t as famous as Namie right now, because Namie is promoting singles after singles. (Like the one right now). Ayu was out for a whole year or two, I think. Maybe that’s why she wasn’t on the top list. (I know for sure she’s somewhere in the list, cuz she released an album of some sort this year.).

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1173575658 Kelvin Yong

    ok~ thanks!

  • brontesaurus

    Lol true true.
    I hope it’s gone too… ;_;

  • Misono66

LOL really? thats sad isn’t it,  the headline Is
Japan’s favorite artists named by 20,000 people
so according to Korean media it must be anti-hallyu sigh
if this was a Korean poll then I doubt many if any Japanese Artists would make the Korean top 20 favorite artists list

I could be wrong but think its fair to say that Japan is far more excepting of Kpop artists than Korea is of Japanese Artists, they have no right to complain (..)

What did cyzo say about Jun and his magical stone?!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/foreverstorm90 Arashian

Arashi were REALLY underrated in the past.

That’s why, I hope the currently underrated groups wouldn’t give up.

  • http://twitter.com/foreverstorm90 Arashian

    Thank you for adding it!

*saves* do you have Arashi’s circle?

  • http://twitter.com/foreverstorm90 Arashian

Arashi have like… 9 tv shows. (or maybe more) They started having shows since 2001 (or was it 2000?)

  • http://twitter.com/foreverstorm90 Arashian

    Currently, yes.

  • http://twitter.com/foreverstorm90 Arashian

Arashi are the best selling male group in Japan.
AKB48 are the best selling female group in Japan.

And, obviously, AKB48 are the best selling female group in all Asia.

  • http://twitter.com/foreverstorm90 Arashian

Are you new to this world?

  • brontesaurus

    I sure do ^^
Their’s actually surprised me haha. I didn’t expect so many guy fans, or for their fans to be so old xD it’s pretty good I guess.

  • http://twitter.com/foreverstorm90 Arashian

Among all the Jpop and Kpop groups I stan.. Arashi’s friendship bonds are the best.

And to be honest, that’s what matters the most in a group. What’s good about a group that dance and sing well but can’t get along well?

Arashi are idols. They do more than just sing and dance. They’re Japan’s tourist ambassadors.

  • Youre_plastic_if_you_read_this

Actually I don’t expect KPOP to come out because their fanbase is relatively small compared to the artsists listed here. It’s tough for them to make it even here. How can they possibly dominate the whole world?

  • Anonymous

i dont watch their dramas anymore…or listen to their songs anymore but the shows they host are bloody entertaining lol and of course who can forget the chemistry between the members? :D

  • Youre_plastic_if_you_read_this

At least there’s variety. Better than Kpop. All the songs sound the same.

  • Youre_plastic_if_you_read_this

It’s irrelevant here but I still can’t figure out why my picture is like that even though I tried changing it. ._.

  • MinahMyu

Korean music and Kpop has variety.. of course everyone’s gonna think it doesn’t if they see idol groups being pushed down in everyone’s faces.  If people took time to look they can certainly find variety. Pop =/= all of music

  • MinahMyu

    @6th-644a28d23a35523e1b795e40aa77ce1a:disqus
Ayu wasn’t out the whole year or even 2. She released a bunch of stuff last year, and did do her mini-album PLUS relief-related events (the 40 women around the world thingy shot by Leslie, her tour, song being used in a video game, another Leslie Kee photoshoot that featured other singers like JERO, Alisa, Kara, etc) She’s been active too… I dunno how much stuff Mr Children do a year and other artists but they’re still on the list.  But Namie has also been out way longer than Ayu and was pretty much out during the whole female idol boom. I just don’t think it has to do with releases for this year (like Utada is on hiatus and she managed to be part of the top 5)

  • MinahMyu

Totally agree. People seem to think that music (in general) is ruled by the younger generation while.. people of all ages still do enjoy music.. and the people they grew up with. ^^ That’s why I get happy when veterans appear on Oricon because it shows their popularity is apparent and it’s not just young people buying music.. but older people too

  • tsurisparkles

Really? I am curious about this. Do you have a link?

  • Mochi-chan

damn~~ go arashi~ keep killing lol
and people saying idols are dominating too. <__< as if~ beside arashi and 48 i don't see any other idols.

but tbh..namie need to be higher…<__<

LOL even though I love a few K-pop group they are no where near the popularity of J-artists at all.

  • Mochi-chan

    i don’t count perfume as idols though………

    ARASHI is awesome!!
    I really love them!!

  • Anonymous

they debuted 1999 their single was well received, but they by 2000 they’re popularity went down. They had to work hard to try to succeed. they received critizim from other and ppl kept on saying they wouldn’t make it. Even the agency made Arashi their last priority. They were going to release a single “subarashi sekai” they even made the pv, but was never released because the agency knew it wouldn’t sell so they canceled it as well as a DVD con.
They had a hard time during 2000-2005.
One of the reason’s Arashi became known was due to Handan.
2006 was when they were getting noticed
2007 they were getting more fans and by 2008 they were well known. 2009 was huge for them cuz it was their 10th anniversary and Everybody took notice.
    and NOw it’s 2011 XD

If you see Arashi’s popularity in a graph it would look like a U

  • brontesaurus

    Thanks for that :3
I’m a pretty new fan of Arashi and I don’t know much about their history. That’s really sad ;_; especially about Subarashi Sekai. I like that song ><
It would look like a U? Way to be technical xD

  • Anonymous

their debut single was actually a hit and they were know as jr It seemed like they would make it big. but then years later it dropped
and then hanadan happened XD and it went up again!

    how new are u?

  • Anonymous

When they debuted, Ohno is 18 years old but he already left high school. Sho is 17 years old which he was in his final year of high school and he went to Keio university the next year. Aiba was in his 2nd year of high school. Nino and Jun were in their 1st year of high school.

  • brontesaurus

I knew their popularity went down, but I didn’t know it was that bad :( I can’t imagine them being so unpopular. I’m glad they are where they are now ^^

I’ve been a fan for just over a year. It was a week or two after Jun’s birthday I think because I was annoyed I missed it lols. So not that new I guess… But a lot newer than most fans lols. I still feel like I have so much to catch up on.

    What about you?

  • Anonymous

actually besides from Hanadan ofc…their very first Asia tour gave a big impact too (w/c made them recognized more to d general public like how Akb become so recognizable too after their int. tour)…. & after “TRUTH” single ~ they had pretty stable high sales to present.

    ME:
a fan since late 2009 I was in vacations when i discover them by watching Hanadan.
I knew Jun was in a group, but didn’t bother to search them up until i finished all of Hanadan so i thought that the F4 were that group. and i was like O.O what Oguri can sing XD
though i immediately liked them(love so sweet, one love, sakura sake)
hitomi no naka galaxy, all or nothing , a day in our life turned me off. so I went back to Jdramas which I was addicted to back then XD
watch Stand Up! Luved the opening. Kotobayori taisetsu no mono and I was back again with Arashi LOL

Lol, I meant my comment more around the lines that Korean media, by its own standards of reporting Kpop news, would term all these people anti-hallyu because they didn’t vote for Kpop.

  • brontesaurus

You thought that F4 were the group LOLOL. That’s funny :’)
I don’t like any of the songs you said either lols. And I wasn’t a big fan of Stand Up!  Idk why though. But Kotoba etc. is one of my favourite Arashi songs :3
Glad to see you decided to stick with us! xD

  • ann.la

Whoa I don’t see Ayumi Hamasaki or Koda Kumi on here O_O but congrats to Arashi! Those boys worked hard to where they are now. Who can’t like them? Aah Yui and AKB48 are also on here! Oh yeeeeeeah!~

  • Sakiki

Ikimonogakari, mr Children, Fukuyama Masaharu, B´Z…. when I see this I still have faith for Japanese people good taste in music
I´m so glad to see they are so popular

  • Sakiki

no, they don´t reach this level of popularity.  Get over it

  • Sakiki

I´ve heard Arashi wasn´t that popular at the beggining. Idk if true

  • Sakiki

Yamapi is somewhat hated rn for the “leaving NEWS” incident
KAT-TUN is not even close to reach this levels of popularity
Koda Kumi dig her own grave in public opinion´regards with the amniotic fluid comment
    so, yeah.

  • Sakiki

True. no go tell hat to korean media and delusional fans

  • http://twitter.com/adonichan アドちゃん

We’re talking about music, don’t bring Koda Kumi in the discussion :)

  • Sakiki

Arashi is the second biggest selling idol group after AKB…

  • Sakiki

    Arashi do fanservice too, so?
it doesn´t rest credit to AKB sales

  • Sakiki

    a newbie!!!! how cute
Don´t worry, with time you willl also become a bitter bitch like all of us <3 You are in the right track with that comment LOL

  • Sakiki

    No, they suck at everything.
But talent is the least relevant quality in idol industry. it´s all about charisma and personality. and tons of marketing

  • Sakiki

OMG this is a tragedy! idols actually have a career (+ 10 years) in Japan! unlike American market where boybands lasted 4 years o Korea where groups last 3 years because they debut half baked shit every 5 minutes.

as a fan of J rock I have to agree with the las sentence, it´s hard for them. but isn´t like that all over the world since forever? I don´t see why Japan has to be the exception…

    ARASHI ARASHI for dream~~

  • http://twitter.com/foreverstorm90 Arashian

    Arashi debuted in 1999.
But they’ve known each other for 15 years.

  • http://twitter.com/foreverstorm90 Arashian

It’s true. They were VERY underrated.

  • http://twitter.com/hazel_darlene Darlene Hazel

nah…. I think they are pretty popular in the beginning.. it’s just that their popularity dropped.. look a.ra.shi. is their best single up to now because it sold about 900,000+ copies which is the highest sales of their single up to now

  • KATTUNnoARASHI

I didn’t.  I’m still a KAT TUN fan…and not a JIn Akanishi fan…never will be again.  Long story, so I won’t say, but I don’t trust him now.

  • KATTUNnoARASHI

“Kimchi overlords”  ROTHFMAO!  I love that.

  • KATTUNnoARASHI

And Arashi fans go nuts!!!  I don’t thing I’ve laughed THIS MUCH at the responses as the ones for these lists…not in a LONG, LONG TIME!

  • http://twitter.com/foreverstorm90 Arashian

But that’s just their DEBUT single.

  • KATTUNnoARASHI

Yes to all of the above.  But another thing they are good at, and it isn’t a talent, is making people…not just their fans…feel important.  They seem to really CARE about others.  To me, that is more imortant than any talent they posses…which is ALOT.

  • KATTUNnoARASHI

    Everyday is ARASHI DAY.

  • KATTUNnoARASHI

To most people, being able to take this list AFTER TEN YEARS PROVES THAT BAND IS EXCEPTIONAL.

  • KATTUNnoARASHI

That’s cold.  I don’t much like her music either, but…that’s cold.

  • KATTUNnoARASHI

I think a lot of “KAT TUN fans” were in reality, Jin Akanishi fans, and when he left KAT TUN, so did they…however, the REAL fans still support KAT TUN, and we always will, because it is THE BAND we like..not the individual.  When Jin left, they had some bumpy times, but they ARE climbing back up.  Who knows, next year, they might take the top spot on a list just like this one.  All we can do is support them, right?

  • http://www.facebook.com/Naymel Naymel Alejandra Guzman

Wow this list is amazing!! though i don’t really listen to Arashi hehe and i really have to say it, that it makes me happy that theres no even one korean group in here, i mean i like groups like KARA and 4minute, but for Jpop is in general better than Kpop so it makes me glad to see that japanese people really appreciate what they have =) next time i will like to see more Jrock and Momusu in here ^^

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Roy-Maywheather/100001803532809 Roy Maywheather

No ayumi here?? that’s odd, I know she’s been losing popularity but never imagined this fast.

  • setsuka

way to you and everyone who replied to my comment missing the whole point

    stay smart yall,stay smart

  • Sakiki

your point is that “there are awesome new artist but don’t currrr for them anymore because ,stuck same people ten years ago”

that people has a career, a career is as least 10 years long… so what if people vote for stablished artists? why they have to vote for newbies who still haven´t develop a career?

plus you say “pop was great 10 years ago in terms of talent and success”
if they have talent 10 years ago…what about now they don´t have talent anymore?? because 10 years have passed? you say: “I knew Japan’s taste was getting basic”
How these artist are basic if you are saying they had talent 10 years ago?

it´s easy to say we missed a point when you didn´t make a point at all, LOL

    it should be 嵐がとても大好きですね。。。。。

Japanese sentences never have spaces between words. And the reason why you use “ga” instead of “ha” is because they have two different meanings. If you use ga…it refers to you and others actually loving Arashi. If you use “ha” it won’t make any sense as you’re trying to say that Arashi loves…but with daisuki you need an object to love. So yea “ga” should be used ^^b

  • http://profiles.google.com/shadowpal2 Déjà D’être

IDOL GROUPS have no variety. It’s all the same damn thing, you are correct in that regard. However…there are some wonderful Korean MUSICIANS out there. Yes…actual musicians…not company manufactured products.

Seo Taiji (THE KING/FATHER OF KPOP), Nell, Monni, Outsider, Rain, Cherry Filter, and BoA (although I wish she’d write more of her own lyrics).

…um…. why does it feel like you’re arguing against me when I pretty much, in essence said what you just did.  That there is more than just pop in Korean music industry…. And um.. BoA would be considered your manufactured product.. she’s just a soloist, not in a group but now since she paid her dues to the industry she has a lot of freedom of what she want or do not want to do. (but she was just like any other idol girl just by herself )  Maybe that comment is more intended for the person above me because unlike many other people, I’m well aware that Korean music has more than just idol groups.. hence.. why I said what I said. (Just like Japan isn’t 48 & Johnnys… )
