On October 3, Kadokawa Pictures announced that they are going to release a sequel to the horror movie 'Sadako 3D' in summer 2013.
'Sadako 3D' was the latest installment in the popular 'Ring' ('Ringu') series and opened on 213 screens nationwide this past May. It was the series' first venture into the world of 3D, and the movie became a big hit with a cumulative revenue of more than 1,500,000,000 Yen (~$19,228,500 USD). Teenagers, who made up more than half of all viewers, in particular loved the movie.
Director Hanabusa Tsutomu directed this movie and is also going to direct its sequel. This time, the latest 3D technology will be used throughout the entire filming process. In 'Sadako 3D', the protagonist was played by Ishihara Satomi and Sadako herself was played by Hashimoto Ai, but for the sequel we can look forward to a completely new cast.
According to Kadokawa Pictures, the story is set several years after the events in 'Sadako 3D' and will introduce a certain young girl who inherited the genes of Sadako. The author of the original 'Ring' novels, Suzuki Koji, will once again provide the script. He explained that the sequel will reveal the true objective of Sadako who was resurrected in 'Sadako 3D'.
The filming is scheduled to start in the beginning of 2013, and if there is one thing 'Sadako 3D' taught us, it's Sadako's love for promotional activities. Until next summer, we can probably look forward to many teasers and events in addition to announcements about the new cast and more details about the story.
