Comedian Sugi-chan fractures his thoracic vertebrae
In the early morning of September 1, comedian Sugi-chan (39) suffered an injury that will require 3 months of recovery time while filming a TV Asahi variety program.
According to TV Asahi, Sugi-chan was filming for a special fall program (title undecided) that would be broadcast starting on September 9. He was filming at the Chiba International General Swimming Center (in Narashino, Chiba), when he took on the challenge of jumping from a 10 meter (33 feet) diving platform around 1AM.
Sugi-chan stands at 164 cm (5’4.5”) and weighs 83 kg (183 lbs). Under the instructions of an instructor, he jumped feet first instead of head first. According to on-site witnesses, the first words out of Sugi-chan’s mouth when he floated to the surface was “My hip hurts!” He was unable to pull himself up from the side of the pool. Other people pulled him up and the on-site nurse called for an ambulance.
After he arrived at the hospital, he was diagnosed with a fractured 12th vertebrae. He will be hospitalized for 4 – 6 weeks; after that, he will also need rehabilitation after he is sent home to rest.
