The heat wave that hit Japan has also heated up the film industry. Disney Pixar's 'Monsters University' has opened in Japan with an overwhelming strength and easily snatched 1st on the weekend box office chart.

'Monsters University' recorded the biggest opening revenue of any film in Japan this year and therefore even surpassed the opening weekend of the Japanese anime and former number one, 'DRAGON BALL Z'. A cumulative revenue of 5 billion Yen should be well within its reach. Its prequel 'Monsters, Inc.' reached a revenue of over 9 billion Yen in 2002.

In the 2nd spot opened 'Fast & Furious 6' with a similar wonderful opening weekend. It actually grossed twice as much as its direct prequel on its opening weekend. 'Midsummer Formula' dropped to the 3rd place. It already cracked the 1 billion Yen mark and should crack the 1 million viewers mark very soon as well.

The anime 'Gekijouban Gintama Kanketsuhen: Yorozuya yo Eien Nare' experienced a strong opening weekend and opened in 4th place. It's goal will be to surpass its prequel from 2010, which recorded a cumulative revenue of 1,070,000,000 billion Yen. The 5th spot featured the opening of the new 'Sore Ike! Anpanman' film and in 8th place the family film 'Nintama Rantaro Natsuyasumi Shukudai Daisakusen! no Dan'.
