The upcoming summer season for dramas is just around the corner. During the break between the seasons is the time that networks promote their upcoming dramas as much as they can in order to attract as many viewers as possible for their season premieres.

What happens after that depends on how viewers experience the framework consisting of the story, the acting, and the pacing. Is the story compelling enough to make you want to watch the next episode? Is the acting convincing enough to draw you into the world it's trying to create? Is the presentation of the characters and the story dragging too much or maybe even feeling a bit rushed?

Before the actual premiere, there are several components that greatly influence the hype, and consequently, the rating of the first episode. Just try to ask yourself why you are looking forward to a particular drama. Do you like the cast? Do you like the premise that's known so far? Did you like the original novel/manga and are curious about the live-action adaption? The drama announcements usually are made within one or two months before the actual season and therefore it's easy to get lost within this vast amount of information. This is why we decided to offer you a nice overview of the upcoming prime time dramas along with short teasers (if available) that could help you learn more about the upcoming dramas and maybe already put some of them on your imaginary must-see or ignore list.

Please note that all of the information is only based on the information that is currently known (as of July 2nd) and that taiga drama, midnight and late-night dramas as well as dramas that premiered during spring 2013 and dramas of premium/pay-tv networks are not included in this preview.

Check out the Prime Time Drama Preview for the Summer Season 2013 below!

Hanzawa Naoki

The story portrays his ups and downs as a banker and vividly depicts the difficult lives full of trouble and suffering of the generation that entered this line of work during the economic bubble. In front of his subordinates and his family he always only shows his very kind side. Ueto plays Naoki's bright and eloquent wife "Hana".

There's Nanako Matsushima my favorite artist, but why does she have to be in a hospital dramaT_T? I just can't stand and enjoy j-drama that evolves around hospital and police, or detective.

Looks like its going to be a pretty weak summer. Maybe I expected more since the Spring was pretty good... Looking forward to just Summer Nude, Woman, and Hanzawa Naoki.

First 3 paragraphs are copy & paste. I remember them from other previews.

As usual I will avoid the police, detective, and hospital procedurals. I hate those with a passion.

I will consider Summer Nude. I will also consider Starman.  I am curious about Shomuni. I will watch Yamada-kun

There doesn't seem to be much of interest these past year and a half. As usual at least half of the dramas are either law enforcement or hospital dramas which I can't stand, romance are few and far between, but I will take a look at those four.

Totally going to watch 'Summer Nude' for Karina, Toda Erika & Nagasawa Masami! Amazing female cast, Yamapi is a lucky dude.

'Oh my dad' seems to be an overdone concept but interesting screenwriter & the OST done by GreeeeN! going to give it a go.

I'm always in for a drama with Sakai Masato, so totally going to watch Hanzawa Naoki plus I usually enjoy Aya's drama's.

'Shomoni 2013' might be good if the comedy is done right

Havent watch Saito season 1.. might as well give it go since it actually comes with a second season

so many new doramas to watch!

Just by watching the previews, for now, I'm mainly interested in 'Starman ~ Kono Hoshi no Koi', 'Mother', 'Hanzawa Naoki' and 'Kyoumei Byoto 24 Ji 5'...even though I'm sad Eguchi is not in this new season, but I do like Matsushima Nanako, Sasaki Kuranosuke & Tokito Saburo, so I'll be watching season 5 mainly for them =)

As for the other doramas, well...they don't interest me as much from the previews, but I might consider watching some of them after I'm finished with 4 doramas I'm most interested in.

OMG! I didn't know of the existence of 「Keibuho Yabe Kenzo」 with my hero Namase Katsuhisa!!! (Unfortunately only 6 episodes for the first season...) I laughed so hard with him on Trick! ... Anyway going to watch it tonight! \(^∇^)/

PS: Tokyohive admins, could you please return the Facebook 'Like' button from the previous version? I know the 'Share' button is there, but it's not the same, a simple like sometimes it's ok, instead of placing the 'Like' article on your wall. Please! Thanks for your hard work!!

I have a soft spot for Yamashita even though his acting is weak, but Summer Nude is a must-see now he's surrounded by beautiful and talented actresses!

I'm surprised that the Kis-My-Ft2 guy is cast over Nakayama Yuma for the lead. I think the reverse would have been better.  I enjoyed the manga, but the live-action adaption is likely to be disappointing.

it would be even more surprised if Yuma became the lead actor because Tamamori is by far more popular. Johnnys has kept debuting Yuma n-times and pushed him very hard but he always failed lol.
