Yomiuri TV has announced that Downtown DX, the long-running talk variety show hosted by comedy duo Downtown, will end with its final broadcast on June 26. The show first premiered in October 1993 and has been a Thursday night fixture for over three decades.
Known for its playful format and candid celebrity conversations, Downtown DX gave audiences a closer look at their favorite stars through various segments like the popular “Star no Shifuku,” where celebrity outfits were ranked by price. These signature features helped establish the show as a staple of late-night Japanese entertainment.
In recent months, the show has undergone several changes. Following Hitoshi Matsumoto’s decision to pause his activities earlier this year, Masatoshi Hamada continued as the sole MC until his own temporary leave due to health reasons. Since April, guest hosts have taken over on a rotating basis.
Yomiuri TV shared that the decision to end the program was made after discussions with both hosts, who expressed concern over the disruptions caused by their hiatuses. “Taking all factors into account, we have decided to bring the show to a close,” the network said. “We are grateful to everyone who supported Downtown DX over the years, and we will continue to deliver laughter until the very end.”
Details about the successor program will be revealed in the coming weeks.
