The live-action filmExit 8, starring Kazunari Ninomiya and directed by Genki Kawamura, has been officially invited to the Midnight Screening section of the 78th Cannes Film Festival.
Based on the viral game created by KOTAKE CREATE, Exit 8 unfolds a surreal and eerie journey through a mysterious underground corridor that loops endlessly, confronting the protagonist with subtle, yet disturbing abnormalities at every turn. The film has gained attention for its unique concept and immersive execution, now earning a place on the global stage.
Ninomiya shared his excitement about the unexpected call from director Kawamura:
“When I saw his name pop up, I thought maybe I had to redo a line… but then he said, ‘Nino! We got into Cannes!’ It was the biggest surprise and the best call ever.”
Kawamura, who both directed and wrote the film, also expressed disbelief and joy at the invitation:
“That this strange Japanese underground passage film is going to Cannes—it’s a kind of anomaly itself. We’re heading into this world stage with excitement and pride.”
Original game creator KOTAKE CREATE added:
“I never dreamed that something I made would not only be turned into a film but would also be invited to Cannes. I hope this helps more people discover both the game and the film.”
Exit 8 will now join the ranks of global cinema as part of one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals. The film is set for release in 2025.
