Kabuki actor Ichikawa Enou (72), who has been recuperating from a stroke since February 2004, made his return to the stage after almost 8.5 years in The July Kabuki Sanmon Gosanno Kiri at the Shinbashi Theater in Tokyo.
Upon Enous entrance on stage in the role of a pilgrim, the audience clapped loudly in recognition of his stage name Omodakaya! At the curtain call of the opening day, he shook hands with Ichikawa Ebizou (34), who also appeared in the play. His eldest son, Kagawa Teruyuki (46),who made his kabuki debut in June, appeared on stage as a kuroko (traditional Japanese theater stagehand).
The play will run until July 29.
