Monchhichis celebrate their 39th birthday with 9nine
On January 27th, the popular character Monchhichi celebrated its 39th birthday and held a 'Thank You Monchhichi 39th Birthday Party' together with idol group 9nine at Ikebukuro Sunshine City in Tokyo. 9nine's PV for "White Wishes" also featured the Monchhichis and the group performed it together with two other songs at the birthday party. The girls also presented the Monchhichis with a sweet birthday cake.
The Monchhichi franchise was created by doll company Sekiguchi and the first 'Futago no Monchhichi' ('Twin Mochhichis') went on sale on January 26th, 1974. The freckled little monkeys rapidly increased their popularity among children, received a TV anime series and were soon exported overseas, where children immediately grew fond of the stuffed toy as well. More than 70,000,000 Mochhichis have been sold until now.
Of course the girls of 9nine are also big fans of the monkeys. Member Kawashima Umika revealed, "We (9nine members) all have the same Monchhichi season ticket holder. They are loved by all ages, because they are just too adorable! Please continue to stay by our side!" At the event they also talked about other items they have been treasuring since their childhood. Kawashima continued, "During my first year in junior high, I appeared in a drama together with Matsu Takako and she gave me a purple muffler. I was too happy and didn't want to use it at first, but now I have been carefully using it for seven years already."
The other girls also expressed their love for the Moncchihis and Nishiwaki Sayaka commented, "I want us to become a group that will forever be loved just like the Monchhichis."
