Japan Box Office Report June 29/30

TH STAFF

'Midsummer Formula' - the second theatrical motion picture in the very popular 'Galileo' series - rockets to the top of the box office chart without any problems.

It recorded the best opening weekend of any live-action film so far this year. The first film in the series experienced a slightly better start in 2010 and almost surpassed the 5 billion Yen mark at the end, but the new film is definitely going to reach a cumulative result of at minimum 2 billion Yen with such an opening weekend. If people continue to flock to its screenings in a steady number, it should actually be able to crack the 3 billion Yen mark as well. In fact, not even the 4 billion Yen mark isn't completely out of the equation.

Last weekend's top 3 was pushed down and can now be found from 2nd to 4th place. The fifth spot featured the opening of 'The Hangover Part III', which is the first film of the trilogy to make it into the top 10 in Japan. However, the first two films weren't given as much exposure and only gained more popularity after their respective DVD/Blu-ray releases.

Meanwhile, 'Ghost in the Shell: Arise' was able to remain inside the top 10 for another weekend, which is a huge achievement considering its incredibly low exposure.

Don't forget to check out the trailers of all the new Japanese films below the box office chart!
