For the fifth year straight, KAT-TUN's Kamenashi Kazuya (24) and Kouda Kumi (27) have been awarded the Popular Choice Award at the Japan Jeans Association's Best Jeanist Awards held in Tokyo. The awards celebrate Japan's most denim-savvy citizens every year in a national vote for the country's best looking jeans-wearers.
Kamenashi and Kouda's winning the award this year mark the first occurrence of a male and female celebrity entering the contest's Hall of Fame at the same time. They join fellow artists Kimura Takuya (SMAP/age 37) and Hamsaki Ayumi (32) among others in the Jeansist Hall of Fame.
"It's a pleasure to be able to meet Kamenashi-kun here year after year," Kouda Kumi was quoted as saying at the awards ceremony.
"I feel like I've reached the 200 hit mark!" Kamenashi said. "Really, every year I've been happy [to received this award]. I always thought it would be nice to get into the Hall of Fame someday. I'm really thankful that it has actually happened."
Beyond the Popular Choice, the association also bestows awards based on the decision of committee panelists. In this category, trans-gender talent Haruna Ai, actor Kiritani Kenta (30), and AKB48 member Itano Tomomi (19) were selected as the 2010 Jeanists.
And in a new category recognizing Japanese Jeanists abroad, soccer player Honda Keisuke (Moscow CSKA/age 24) was honored with the first Golbal Special "Fighting Spirit" Award. When informed of his new status as best-looking, globe-trotting Japanese guy in jeans, Honda stated, "That's an award I absolutely never dreamed I'd receive! I'm really surprised. I'll take this opportunity and try to win again next year!"
