JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles has announced the U.S. debut of the "yoshikitty" dolls, based on international music icon YOSHIKI, at the "Yes, KAWAII is Art - EXPRESS YOURSELF" exhibition. This unique exhibition, running from May 16 to August 31, 2024, in Hollywood, features the first Sanrio character modeled after a real person – YOSHIKI.
YOSHIKI, the first Japanese artist to receive the globally recognized hand and footprints at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, has been an advisor to JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles since 2023. His connection to the cultural project dates back to its grand opening in 2018, where he performed.
The "yoshikitty" dolls, dressed in outfits inspired by YOSHIKI's iconic stage performances, highlight the evolution of Japanese kawaii culture into a global phenomenon. This concept is central to the exhibition curated by "King of Kawaii" Sebastian Masuda. The dolls' U.S. debut includes special video commentary by Hello Kitty designer Yuko Yamaguchi, adding an exclusive touch to the display.
The "yoshikitty" character has been a strong contender in the global Sanrio Character Ranking for ten consecutive years, achieving top ranks in Brazil, China, France, Germany, and Thailand.
"YOSHIKI continues to serve as a bridge between Japan and the world with this latest collaboration," said Yuko Kaifu, president of JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles. "We’re delighted to feature ‘yoshikitty’ in our current exhibition, which showcases Sebastian Masuda’s works and the broader impact of kawaii culture."
The "Yes, KAWAII is Art - EXPRESS YOURSELF" exhibition is open daily with free admission at the JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles Gallery on Level 2. Visitors are welcome from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and until 8 p.m. on weekends. For more details, visit the JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles website and their social media channels.
