Former figure skating champion Miki Ando is under scrutiny from the Japan Figure Skating Instructors Association, which is reportedly considering disciplinary action after allegations of a close relationship with a 16-year-old male student surfaced. The controversy, brought to light by Weekly Bunshun, has prompted discussions about professional boundaries in coaching.
On July 19, Ando publicly addressed the situation on the internet program ABEMA Prime, where she expressed regret over her actions. "My careless behavior has caused concern within the skating community and among those closest to me," Ando stated, offering an apology. She clarified that her relationship with the student was misinterpreted, though she acknowledged the impact of her actions.
The situation escalated after Weekly Bunshun detailed an incident in late June, where Ando and the student were seen displaying affection during a visit to Universal Studios Japan, accompanied by the student’s mother. The following day, they were spotted together in Nagoya, where the student visited Ando's family home. The two were later seen dining together and showing further signs of a close relationship.

Ando firmly denied any romantic involvement, explaining that she maintains close relationships with her students as part of her coaching style. However, the controversy has raised concerns within the figure skating community. During a meeting in early July, Minoru Sano, president of the Japan Figure Skating Instructors Association, hinted at issuing a "strict warning" to Ando. However, this move was halted by the association’s legal counsel, leaving the matter unresolved for now.
Sources suggest that while the student wished to continue training under Ando, his parents were reportedly uncomfortable with the situation. It is believed that the coaching relationship has since been terminated.
As the figure skating world anticipates the upcoming season, the implications for Ando’s career remain unclear. Both Ando and her representatives have declined to provide further comments on the ongoing situation.
