A recent survey conducted by RECCOO’s Circle Up service has revealed some interesting insights into how Gen Z views TV stations and content. Among the most surprising results is the finding that TBS is considered the most favorable TV station by university students, while Fuji TV ranks at the bottom of the list.
The survey focused on university students’ opinions about TV, with 60% of respondents citing the entertainment value of variety shows as a key reason for choosing their preferred TV stations. Drama quality also played a significant role in their decisions, with fewer students showing a preference for news or documentaries.
When asked about their favorite TV programs, TBS and Nippon TV dominated the rankings. "ItteQ!" (Nippon TV) claimed the top spot, followed by "Wednesday's Downtown" (TBS) and "Monday Late-show" (Nippon TV). Many students mentioned that clips from these shows often go viral on platforms like X, helping to keep them relevant and engaging to the younger audience.
However, when it comes to streaming platforms, YouTube takes the lead, followed by Netflix, with TBS in third place. Despite the trend of young people shifting away from traditional TV, TBS still managed to retain some relevance, largely due to hit shows like "VIVANT" and "La Grande Maison Tokyo," which are also available on streaming platforms.
The study also highlighted how important it is for TV stations to offer unique and engaging content, particularly when it comes to attracting Gen Z viewers. While traditional TV might not hold as much sway as streaming services, shows that have viral appeal and are widely discussed on social media continue to capture young people's attention.
