Supermarket shoppers in Japan may be surprised to find actor Tatsuya Fujiwara's face wrapped around heads of lettuce.
On July 21, select supermarkets in the Tokyo metropolitan and Kansai areas began selling lettuce featuring packaging printed with Fujiwara's face as part of Ajinomoto's "Cook Do" Oyster Sauce campaign. The initiative was created in collaboration with JA Zen-Noh Nagano, which represents one of Japan's largest lettuce-producing regions.
While the packaging has attracted attention for its unusual design, the campaign was actually launched to help reduce food waste. According to Ajinomoto, recent heat waves have made it more difficult to maintain lettuce quality. Meanwhile, a company survey found that more than 60% of consumers have thrown lettuce away because they didn't know how to use an entire head other than making salads.
Each package includes a QR code linked to a website featuring recipes that use "Cook Do" Oyster Sauce to prepare lettuce in a variety of ways, encouraging consumers to use the vegetable more efficiently. Only 10,000 of the special packages will be available.
On the campaign, Fujiwara joked, "There was a request saying, 'There's a lettuce crisis, would you lend us your face?' I said, 'Sure,' but it turned out to be a job where I literally lent my face." He added that he would be "waiting" for shoppers at supermarkets. Meanwhile, his official staff account encouraged fans to let them know if they spot the special packaging.
