Despite the big tragedy that fell upon Japan on Friday and the coming days, months, years - many theaters in the unaffected regions of Japan were open and screening movies as usual. The overall box office suffered a lot but nobody in the movie industry would be dumb enough to voice their trivial sorrows.
That aside, it wasn't a big surprise that the second movie of the "SP" franchise was able to claim the top spot. "Doraemon" is still up there in the top 3, and people still love Disney animations, giving "Tangled" enough love for the third spot this weekend. The third new entry in the top 10 was another animated movie, "Nintama Rantarou", on in eighth place.
Many theaters that had to close during the weekend have reopened on Monday the 14th, but a couple of openings might get affected in the coming weeks. The first obvious delay was the Chinese disaster/drama movie "Aftershock", since hardly anybody would want to watch a film about earthquakes in theaters right now. Additionally, the rolling blackouts will greatly influence the program of the affected theaters, so people in Japan should make sure to check with their local theaters before deciding on watching a movie.
