[INTERVIEW] Phantom Siita on their retro-horror concept and embarking on a tour early in their career
TH STAFF
Nearly seven months into their career, Phantom Siita already has six digital singles and one album under their name. On top of that, the five-member Japanese girl group is set to embark on their first-ever world tour in January 2025, an impressive feat for a newly debuted group.
Produced by the iconic singer Ado, Phantom Siita is continuing to build their unique "retro-horror" concept, evident in their releases like "Otomodachi," "Zokuzoku," "Kimi to XXXX Shitai dake," "Mashou Shoujo," "Hanabami," and their debut album 'Shoujo no Hi no Omoide.'
The quintet's inaugural tour, aptly titled 'Moth to a flame,' spans a total of 15 cities and will kick off in Taipei on January 16 and conclude in London on February 19. The tour title symbolizes the fans who are irresistibly drawn to Phantom Siita. "While this is a venture into the unknown for us, we hope to reach everyone around the world who always supports us. We’re excited to showcase our ‘retro horror’ style to you all," they stated.
Ado shared in a press release: "I think it’s quite rare for a group’s first tour to be a world tour, both as idols and as artists. Please look forward to their bold and unconventional beginning of their artistry."
Presented by Ovation Productions, Phantom Siita's 'Moth to a flame' show in Manila, Philippines is scheduled to take place on January 18 at Samsung Hall, SM Aura.
Ahead of the group's tour commencement, tokyohive had the chance to chat with Mona, Miu, Rinka, Hisui, and Moka to dish on their 2025 goals and tour preparations, among others. Read our exclusive interview with Phantom Siita below!
tokyohive: Hi, Phantom Siita! First of all, introduce yourselves to our readers. Tell us your goals and hopes for yourselves and for your group for this year.
Mona: I am Mona and my color is pink. We were fortunate to experience a lot of new and amazing things last year so my goal and hope for 2025 is to grow further as an idol, both personally and as a group.
Hisui: I am Hisui and my color is green. I love horror so in 2025, to deepen my understanding and expression of the retro-horror concept, I want to drown myself in the deep sea of many many scary things.
Miu: My name is Miu and my color is white. I had never taken up dance or vocal lessons until recently and I started my career as an idol without any experience so there are many things I need to learn. I want to work on that and I also hope to expose myself to different kinds of art to brush up my expression which is essential for Phantom Siita.
Rinka: I am Rinka and my color is purple. My goal for 2025 is to stay healthy 365 days of the year and not get sick!
Moka: My name is Moka and my color is light blue. Of course, I want to improve my vocal and dance skills but I am learning that the concept of retro-horror is very profound. So with the inspiration I get from my fellow members, I want to brush up on my expression of that concept.
tokyohive: It's only been around six months since Phantom Siita debuted. How does it feel to embark on a world tour this early in your career? What have the preparations for the tour been?
Moka: We are practicing hard and trying out different things to put out a performance that is enjoyable to our international audience. Personally, I am getting my travel gear ready and trying to stay healthy for the trip.
tokyohive: Tell us about the meaning behind the tour name ‘Moth to a flame.’ What can we expect from your live performances that would incorporate the retro-horror concept into the tour stages?
Miu: The title comes from a Japanese proverb “飛んで火にいる夏の虫” which reflects the idea that, even knowing of the potential risks, fans are still drawn to Phantom Siita, like moths to a flame. It also expresses us who are about to embark on the world tour less than a year after the debut. It may be risky, like jumping into a flame. We are heretics in that way, fans who love us are also heretics like us. That’s the meaning behind this title.
tokyohive: Which track are you most excited about performing live on stage, and why?
Moka: I love to perform “Just Wanna xxxx With You,” which is our second single. This was an assigned song to perform at the 3rd stage of the audition so we have been practicing this song the longest. The moment I hear this first note, I can immerse myself right in it. During the performance, I can feel the presence of other members very much and that is also why I love performing this song.
Mona: I love performing all of our songs but I especially enjoy performing “Zokuzoku.” Compared to other songs, there are fewer unison parts in this song and the same can be said for the choreography. A sudden change of the melody is also very playful. Solo sections stand out so I enjoy hearing solos of the other members and I also enjoy my own. Overall, a very enjoyable song.
Miu: I am most excited to perform “Otomodachi” which is our debut single. Since we performed this song for the first time, the song has evolved so much and our ability to express the song has progressed a lot. Our facial expression and vocals on this song keep changing so that is also a fun aspect.
Rinka: My favorite is also “Zokuzoku.” Here is a union part where we all do the same move. I love that part the most.
Hisui: I really enjoy all the songs but I personally enjoy “Hanabami” the most. This is a song of emotional explosion and there is a part where all the members gather and cluster over me. When I’m really immersed in the song, I throw everyone around as the mood strikes. That part really makes me happy because they come so close to me. I love it.
tokyohive: Have any of you visited the Philippines before? Share with us some activities you have on your bucket list - things that you’d like to do in the country if time permits.
Rinka: It’s our first time. Our visit to the Philippines will be in January which is the middle of winter in Japan. But the Philippines is warm so it makes me feel good to be able to feel summer in wintertime. My English teacher at school is from the Philippines and they are very kind and warm, so I am looking forward to getting to know the people there. I also want to eat a lot of Philippine bananas so I’m looking forward to that as well.
tokyohive: Lastly, feel free to leave a message to your fans and tokyohive readers, and invite everyone to attend your shows!
Mona: Phantom Siita might be a new genre in Japanese musical culture and we might not be the typical idol that’s currently popular in Japan but once you listen to us and see us perform, you can’t get us out of your head. I hope you dig deeper into our concept of retro-horror and check out our performance.
Phantom Siita: Please come see us at our Manila show!
