Netflix’s upcoming samurai action series Last Samurai Standing has revealed 14 new cast members, showcasing a talented group of top Japanese actors. The series is set to premiere in November and promises a gripping battle for survival that signals a new era for Japanese period dramas.

Junichi Okada leads the cast as Shujiro Saga. In addition to starring as the protagonist, he makes his debut as an action choreographer and producer. Okada shared his excitement about the project, saying, “This is a truly special project for me. Not only am I playing the lead role, but I also had the privilege of overseeing the action choreography. It was an incredible challenge to bring the world of the samurai to life, and I’m excited for audiences to see it.” Riho Yoshioka joins him as his wife, Shino, while Yumia Fujisaki plays Futaba Katsuki, a determined young girl who becomes part of the story. His allies, Iroha Kinugasa, Shikura Adashino, and Sansuke Gion, are played by Kaya Kiyohara, Taichi Saotome, and Yuya Endo.

The Storyline: A Deadly Samurai Showdown

Last Samurai Standing is based on the Ikusagami novel series by Shogo Imamura, the 166th Naoki Prize winner. Set in the late 19th century during Japan’s Meiji era, 292 skilled samurai gather at Kyoto’s Tenryu-ji Temple. Drawn by the promise of a grand prize, each participant receives a wooden tag. The rules are simple: collect as many tags as possible and reach Tokyo to win the prize.

Among them is Shujiro Saga, who enters the deadly competition with one goal: to save his ailing wife and child. The series portrays the resilience of samurai facing an uncertain future. With intense action and a battle royale-style narrative, Last Samurai Standing promises to be a thrilling watch.
